Shark Bytes
This show never jumped the shark! As a little girl, I remember renting these videos at the Library because most of them were made right around the time I was born/very young (1983) and they weren't on TV anymore. Now I have the series on DVD and I haven't gotten the chance to really watch all of them but my favorite ones were Thumbelina, Hansel and Grettle, and Pinnochio. I was checking a board on IMDb about this show and I can't believe how many dead actors/actresses are on this show now...kind of sad.
When I was a little girl, I thought this series was as good as smoking marijuana on a warm summer's day is now that I'm sorta grown up. The show jumped the shark once I bought the DVD collection, paid better attention, as it is easier to do at age 25, than age 8, and realized that it has some vulgar material in it that is not suitable for a children's show. Examples include Robin Wiilliams naked in the Frog Prince and he also uses the word "bitchy". There is also an episode where some women are talking about passing gas which is just nasty. If they could have left stuff like that out, and if I word a series critic, this show could have won an award for best children's programming
FAERIE TALE THEATER was a wonderful idea that was actually beautifully pulled off by Showtime. Great children's stories mounted with lavish scenery, costumes, music, and some of the best actors in the business. Shelley Duvall made an unexpectedly charming hostess. Bouquets, in particular, to Jeff Goldblum's Big Bad Wolf, Robin Williams' Frog Prince, and Matthew Broderick's Prince Charming. A wonderful idea. beautifully executed, that never jumped the shark.
When I found this show, I thought I had arrived at Nirvana. What a masterpiece of writing, staging, direction, and visual effect! And the music! That singing and the eerie Gaelic dirges! GOD! The show was close to being orgasmic. Then, out of the blue, poof! it's gone. I'd blow up all of the commercial alphabet networks if I got the chance.
Never Jumped, although I remember a scorpion during the Frog Prince with Terry Garr and Robin Williams. What does this have to do with the story, and why am I now utterly terrified of cat-sized scorpions!!
Just a comment on Jeff Goldblum as the Big Bad Wolf in the story of the "Three Little Pigs" He's the best wolf I've EVER seen. Nobody but Goldblum could have pulled that off as well. BRAVO!!
Shelley Duvall as the hostess scared the pants off me. When she played Rapunzel and also played the girl in Rumplestiltskin- her shrieking voice caused my nightmares. This show was great except for its hostess/ Jennifer Beale as Cinderella was awesome- she was pretty and played the role perfectly/ Matthew Broderick as the prince- in Cinderella was great! Mick Jagger played the emperor in the Nightengale/ Remember Christopher Reeve as the prince in Sleeping Beauty/
