When the show focused everything on that annoying bastard Steve Urkel. And then when he started singing or rapping, whatever the hell that was, it was pretty terrible. He literally ruined that show. It just should have been called the Steve Urkel show.

Rachel- was so having a midlife crisis
Harriette - gonna pull a muscle from wringing her neck around with that upside down mouth all the time.
Carl - just a donut away from a heart attack

I think the show jumped when it started focusing way too much on Urkel. the show was great when he was a guest and it focused on the winslows. but around 1995 ( not sure what season that was ) when steve was able to make Stefan real it got too much of a sci-fi vibe. And then they would just do stupid things to fill in time on the show, like hae eddie dancing around the living or room or Richie doing the same thing.
This show jumped the shark many times, I won't even attempt to name them. It started out as a spin-off from the show "Perfect Strangers", where Harriet also starred as a security guard. I think the original title of the show was "The Winslow Family".

I never found this show funny, Urkel was one of the most ridiculously bad characters ever, and I have no idea how this thing lasted so long. And that jeri-curled kid was an obvious case of "New Kid in Town".

Im going to go with the network switch. I could deal with the kids aging, and the character switches, but somehow when it went to the new network, all the changes became blazingly evident. Maybe new writers and producers made the biggest difference. I love the show though, one of my favorites in syndication.
I had no clue that Michelle Thomas, who played Myra, died. That's sad.
This show had sooooo many crap episodes, I have a hard time remember the few early good episodes (apparently they were there).
Stephan Urquell was horrible (BTW, does anyone else laugh when they see Pilsner Urquell beer, as a result of this show?). Myra was hot, Laura was not; and Myra was way smarter. I remember being impressed with some of her other assets when I watched the show as a kid. I thought the message was horrible: don't be yourself, and you'll get the object of your affection.
Urkel/Urquell made this show increasingly unwatchable.
Plus, Carl's a cop, and never notices that his youngest daughter has gone missing?! They should've showed the family eating breakfast, and in the background you see a milk carton with a missing child picture of Judy on it...that would've been funny.

The ep. where Urkel was killed in a drive by shooting by gangsta's and Carl then looked at the camera and said, "It's 'bout time". I failed to see the comedy in that. JTS for sure w/that episode.
The reason the show ended so quicky was because "Myra" played by Michelle Thomas got really sick and passed away from stomach cancer. I heard they were going to end the show w/Laura and Urkel getting married, and "Myra" Urkel's jealous ex (on the show) was supposed to come in and stop the wedding; but sadly, she passed before they could record that...so they had to go for the lost in space episode. But I loved the show for the most part. The one thing I didn't like was that Judy disappered for no reason at all. The old Harriette (Jo Marie Payton) left to star in another show that didn't do so well. "Rachael" left to star in another show as well. It didn't so well, but then she came back to be on "Half&Half". I don't know what happened to little Rictie. I'm not sure why Mother Winslow went off the show. I do know she passed away in either 1998 or 1999. "3-Jay" was played by Orlando Brown--"Eddie" from That's so Raven. The show was great until they lost and added characters

Family Matters is my favorite sit com, I just didn't like when the first Harriet left. But I still would like to buy the DVD from beginning to the end, I'm just waiting for them to come to the stores.
This show jumped the shark for me in the final season. To this day, I won't watch any episodes in the final season because it just looks like Carl cheated on thre real Harriet Winslow and something looks terribly wrong. Everytime I watch that, I feel as if he is an adulterer cheating on his wife. It looks so bad when an actress plays a role for the entire show and then for the last several episodes it's someone else.
Another reason this show jumped the shark was it's very sad season finale. I mean, they should have had Steve do the Urkel dance one more time and really bring back some stuff they seemed to have completely forgot about from the series like Aunt Una from Altuna, Urkel's cousin whatever her name was
I also would have had the last thing that happened on the episode was Steve kissing Laura before he injured her and commenting "Did I do that?' or something. I mean, the last crappy season ruined the whole show, probably because ABC had dropped it and sent it over to CBS and they were writing for it and didn't remeber all that and have all that information like ABC.
