THIS is the sitcom people are thinking of when they complain about the sterile, conformist, totally whitebread family shows on the '50s.
Leave it to Beaver has underachieving kids who get into trouble all the time, and parents who sometimes do the wrong thing for the right reasons, admit their fallibility, and try to do a better job of raising their kids next time.
Ozzie and Harriet has an absurdist sensibility (it was the original "show about nothing"...Ozzie and Harriet spend an entire episode searching for Tutti-Frutti ice cream to satisfy a mutual craving) and a befuddled dad who never quite seems to know what's going on.
I Love Lucy and Burns and Allen had two completely nutso women at their core; the former was slapstick verging on vaudeville, and the second was surreal Pirandellian theater.
No, Father Knows Best is virtually the only '50s sitcom that actually has the calm, stoic, always-right father, the patrician, cold-as-ice mother, the pretty, popular princess, the aw-shucks teenage boy who inexplicably is minus a libido or any shred of rebellion, and the adorable little daughter who is forever everyone's "kitten."
The show's plots were just as deep and intriguing as its paper-thin characters, and even the laugh track was subdued.
Summary: Father Knows Best was a dud.

as you know by now-FKB was indeed released 4/1 and season 2 will be in Nov. More will be when/if Shout Factory sees enough interest to make it worth heir while. Please see my post after this, with petition for FKB AND a special project by Billy Gray ("Bud Anderson").
I just found out today that "Father Knows Best" Season 1 WILL be released on DVD April 1st. Hmmm: April Fools Day. I hope it isn't some joke. Here's the link: http://www.TVShowsOnDVD.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=8599
I remember Father Knows Best fondly. As a child of the times, I was blissfully unaware of problems and injustices in the world. As kids, we were allowed to play outside until the 7 o'clock whistle blew. Small towns had parades on Memorial Day and families would picnic in the park on Sunday afternoons. It seemed like the whole town would walk to the highest elevation in the town for the July 4th Fireworks. Sure, the world was going to hell, but I didn't know it then, and Father Knows Best brings back the memories of a happier time for me.
This show was like "The Brady Bunch" of the 50's. In my life I actually met a few families where the members had a genuinely loving and caring attitude towards each other. I grew up on the south side of Chicago, and these families were few and far between, but they were there. AITF was a much better depiction of a family in it's time. It seems today that Alec Baldwin's description of his daughter to his daughter sums up about 99% of the kids I see today.
"And besides, what's important to the world: a beautiful young woman, or just another obnoxious, selfish pusher, in whatever job and by whichever sex?"
This is probably one of the most frightening things I have ever seen on this site.

barrko,
People get worked up over shows like this because they view them as part of the establishment that oppressed women, minorities, etc.
The people who produced and aired these types of shows were the same ones who made the Stones change the lyrics of "Let's Spend the Night Together" to "Let's Spend Some Time Together" and "censored" Elvis' hips.
And crikey, reading some of the posts here makes this show seem uber-creepy at best and criminal at worst.

People! People! People!...let's not get so carried away. This is television that we're talking about...fiction...meaning that's it's NOT real. The TV we saw back in the 50s and 60s was reflective of what television writers experienced in their everyday lives...nice house, wife at home, kids at school. It's really not that different today except the house is huge, the wife works in a high-level job or is working with a major organization, and the kids are probably going to a private school (which might explain why the setting in so many TV shows has kids in private school). When we watched "Father Knows Best" back in the 50s and 60s, it was for the entertainment. We grew up in the Midwest, my Dad worked on a farm from sunrise to sunset, came home and yelled at us for about an hour (which is how we learned swear words) and then watched "Father Knows Best" with us.
I'm from Montreal, Canada and I love ALL the American TV Shows especially "Father Knows Best". I wonder why it's not being released on DVD??? Anybody know???

MI FAVORITA SERIE CUANDO YOERA NIÑA, ESPECIALMENTE CUANDO LO VEIA EN MI PAIS DE ORIGEN, LA SERIE SIEMPRE TERMINABA CON UNA FRASE DE ENSENANZA.
ERA ADMIRADORA DE KATHY Y DE BETTY, PASABA UN MOMENTO AGRADABLE CON ELLOS.
LASTIMA QUE A HORA QUE VIVO EN USA POR MAS DE 25 AÑOS NO HE PODIDO VER RERUNS
EXCEPTO EN EL 2002 QUE LO PASABAN EN TV LAND LOS DOMINGOOS A LAS ONCE DE LA MANANA .
DEJO ESTE COMENTARIO EN ESPANOL PARA TODAS LAS HISPANAS QUE EN ALGUNA EPOCA DE NUESTRA VIDA ESTA SERIE FUE DE GRAN INFLUENCIA EN NUESTRA NINEZ.

I also grew up in American Suburbia in the '60s, and thought shows like FKB and LITB represented people from another planet. Even in my pre-feminist childhood I could always recognize that when Betty had some non-traditional career ambition or interest, she would be steered back into her "proper place" by the end of the show. It was painful to watch.
