George of the Jungle made Jay Ward Productions a formidable competitor to Hanna-Barbera, Warner Brothers, Filmation and DePatie-Freleng. Unfortunately, since so few episodes were produced of George, Super Chicken and Tom Slick, this spelled the demise of an animation studio whose DVD releases are now owned by either Sony or Disney.
By the way, while FOX distributed the VHS episodes, the DVDs are actually going to be distributed by Disney, which was responsible for production of the two live-action George films--the first one which rocked and the second one which should have been buried in the cutting room floor.

GotJ JTSed when it was put back on ABC in the '90's, when they took away the 'Tom Slick' segments, cause they thought it was too violent when Baron Otto Matic kept bangin' Clutcher on the head with a wrench for botchin' things up. So ABC never showed us 'Tom.'
This is probably the BEST series of Cartoons EVER. I grew up with the George, Super hicken and Tom Slick shows. When it came out again while in High School, still funy, College, still funny. Parent of two, STILL FUNNY. I wish what ever legal mes or coptright mess would clear and all these would be rereleased as DVDs
GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE-SUPERCHICKEN-TOM SLICK!!! These great cartoons were on when I was in high school but I watched them anyway. SUPERCHICKEN had the fastest theme song ever-29 seconds-but still told you everything you needed to know about him if you could keep from laughing your head off while listening to it. These were great cartoons- Jay Ward and Bill Scott were comic geniuses, that's for sure. WATCH OUT FOR THAT TREE!!!!
GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE was classic animated comedy at its finest. Great animation, subtle, adult humor, a fabulous theme song...everything worked here. "Watch out for that tree!!" No, GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE never came close to jumping the shark.
Add "George of the Jungle", Part Deux...I mean "awk-awk-eek-eek-Tookie-Tookie!" I found what may be the only "George" videos. By now, Jay Ward could do his animation at home, and this has a real '60s look with wild Day-Glo colors. One classic pun here: "You mean that former surgeon from Illinois who turned to a life of mad laboratory work?" "George say- Dr. Chicago!" Great alliterative bit too: "Tiny Tony Tuxedo, the Tip-Top Tailor of Tanzania"- a/k/a pygmy mobster "Little Scissor". This really was a smart little "Tarzan" spoof and probably wasn't so effective in the live-action movie. Anything by Jay Ward rocks, of course, but again...where's Super Chicken???
I'm a born-again Jay Ward fanatic who hadn't seen "Rocky and Bullwinkle" in 35 years until a friend recommended the DVDs to me. Now, I can't get enough of his stuff. "George Of The Jungle", whose theme song stayed in my head, isn't a vivid memory otherwise. But after I read about the "George" series, plus "Super Chicken" (which Ward actually conceived around the same time as "Rocky"), I can't wait for this to come out as aired- because that special "J-Rated" humor is priceless! "Tick-Tock Tech"? "Henry Cabot Henhouse"? "Tooki-Tooki-Birds?" Bring it on! Your fifty-ish convert to Jay Ward-iana awaits- and make sure the Quisp ads are part of it! The Q-man rocks!
I was pretty disappointed, but not totally distraught when I picked up a 3-tape VHS of “George” a few years ago that had practically all of his episodes but no “Tom Slick” or “Super Chicken” included! I guess down the road I’ll have to try to find the others. It was definitely a great, hilarious package deal with each cartoon varying. I remember way fewer SC episodes since they didn’t seem to repeat as often, but in my adult life I’ve actually met someone that sounded just like “Fred” that I nicknamed that, much to his dismay! The sound effects were always good and goofy, there were lots of “inside jokes” like the “Hippies” being drummed up instead of “Hippos” – girls: “La-la-la-la” boys: “Yeah-yeah-yeah!” Also the gimmicky jokes like George’s phone “Aww-aww! Eee-ee! Tookie-tookie!” The stock film clips from the early 20s & 30s thrown in for fun. A great Tom Slick favorite was the wonderful June Foray’s “Sonya Narr and the Aquanuts” – “You have been naughty little Aquanuts!” “Yes Miss Narr!” “…and I’m goin-ck to have to wash your mouths out…” “Yes Miss Narr!” “…with a SUPER SUDSY BOMB!!!!” “A Super Sudsy Bomb??!! OH NO, Miss Narr!!!” I remember some kids in junior high that once disliked a substitute teacher and were whispering to each other “..yes, Miss Narr!” Unfortunately it feels like these classics are lost to only my generation now since none of it seems to play anymore.
How could it have jumped? You've got Jay Ward and Bill Scott (the voice of Bullwinkle) voicing George, Tom Slick and Super Chicken (or was it Fred?). How could it have jumped? Even Weird Al Yankovic turned it into a song.
Personally, I don't see what was so great about this show. I think that George of the Jungle was the lamest and least funny of all the Ward cartoons. Even Hoppity Hooper was better.
George really lucky. Brendan Fraser also really lucky. Usually big-screen adaptation of classic mean show going to tank big time. Casting him as the Tarzan clone ensure opposite. GEORGE LIVES!!!
This show was classic! Bravo, Jay Ward! My favorite was Tom Slick, tho. Finding other guys at college who could sing the theme song while stoned with me was a real ice breaker. And with a car called the Thunderbolt Grease-slapper, how could he ever lose? I especially love how every episode, it'd be a different type of race, so Tom would somehow reconfigure the car into an airplane, boat, motorcycle, I think even a clothes dryer once.
Superchicken was a staple every Sunday morning when I was growing up as a kid before having to go to church with my sister. He is definitely one of the coolest superheroes to ever join the fight against crime(where would you ever see a criminal named Appian Way from Tic-Tock Tech!!!!)Kudos to the Jay Ward Studios for making growing up as a kid in the late '60s & 70's so much fun!
I LOVE George of the Jungle. Super Chicken is the best part of the show. You can't imagine how many funny looks clucking his theme song will get you when discussing favorite cartoons.
Never ever jumped. Jay Ward is a true cartoon genius, and George was one of his best creations. While I love George, I have to confess special fondness for Super Chicken. His constant refrain to his sidekick, "You knew the job was dangerous when you took it, Fred", has become one of my standing mottoes.
