The show was great theatre for me as a kid. My favorite episode, was the one where the group got together to make that music video to their song "you gotta believe". That, and degrassi (the 1980's version), were the best pbs shows ever! I have both series on dvd, I'm so happy to have a part of my childhood memories again.
I recently got ahold of all the Ghostwriter episodes, and I've concluded that this show jumped the shark once Jamal went to London...that episode sucked, then Gaby changed and there was no turning back...
Does anyone remember The New Ghostwriter Mysteries? It came on in late 1997. I guess Canada couldn't cut it.
I have been reading all of these posts and I'm wondering about the Gaby character. I thought they replaced the younger Gaby with the with older Gaby. If I'm wrong please tell me plus if its still on tell what channel and time.
I loved this show, but the constant change in characters and all of the new people and all of the old people really confused me. It was a great concept for kids though and they should bring it back in modern form and not make the same mistakes that they did with the version from the 90's.
I loved this show, and it never jumped the shark, it was one of the best shows for kids. It was entertaining and educational, something that is rare these days. I love the concept of the show and how it allowed viewers to get involve. Each week I looked foward to this show all of the characters were great, my favorite characters where Lenny, Jamal and Gabby.
Yes, I agree with many others that the show started to jump shark after Rob (Todd Alexander) left midway 2nd season. Things weren't so bad at first but once they started bringing in younger characters and recruiting new members right and left, it bleached out so much of the thrill of the secret of Ghostwriter. It's a shame because Rob was such a good character. Y'know some of the Ghostwriter books mentioned he had a deaf older brother named Jason who was away at a special school. I always wished Jason could have been on the show just once to teach the kids about hearing impaired people.
While the ongoing adventures broadened to new horizons (e.g. Jamal's trip to England, Lenni's music video) I feel the stories overall lacked the heart and depth in comparison to some of the earlier episodes. For example, the story about the cockatoo wasn't half as serious as Gaby's illness in "Over a Barrel". "Who is Max Mouse" had a clever but easily outdated idea because of the cruder version of the internet. The drug story with Alex was strong and provocative but I prefer the way Ghostwriter handled violence in "Building Bridges". And who can forget the famous tunnel scene from "To the Light"?
At least we got 18 stories out of this great show. Now to get it on DVD...

Man I loved Ghostwriter like no other! I was just a young'un when this show was on--seriously--Ages 3-6 during the running time. I lost track of it though. It was great, a very multi-cultural cast, and an educaional edge to it too--of course it was on PBS.
I was always intrigued by it, then again I was like 5 when it was on. I wish I could see it again though...

I think the show jumped twice. It jumped the first time when much like everyone else said when they replaced Gaby, her and Jamal were mt favorite characters, the second time they jumped is the station change, they changed the format of the show and it killed the allure that PBS gave it.
Yea, Rob was totally the reason I watched the show-- totally hot. Actually, no, the show's just really great, I've recently rediscovered thanks to an Ebay purchase. But Rob was definitely a perk. And to the dude who commented about 'too many Hispanics on the show,' that's a pretty foolish thing to say. look at all these shows with nary a non-white in sight. i don't hear him complaining about that! Man, ghostwriter...they kept it real...
I hated when they replaced Robb with Hector. Hector was so annoying, and I loved Robb! Granted, they were still able to pull off some pretty good eps w/ Hector there (the Lenni one w/ You Gotta Believe was the best ever), but in general the show went downhill after Robb left.
Remember when Ghostwriter went back in time to help Frank and Annie solve the crime so Frank didn't get sent to military school or something? And Frank always said "hah-cha-cha!" and Ghostwriter almost died or something because he/she/it was so tired from time-traveling...that was one of the best ones, I think.
This show jumped with the departure of Rob/Arrival of the new kids, especially that awful new Gaby. Casey and Hector were cute kids, but they were much more infantile than any of the original characters ever were. The one thing that bothered me more than a little bit was the idea of Tina's big brother hitting on Lenni. He looked like he was at least 16 when we first met him, and she was only in 7th grade. I would've liked that last episode a whole lot better if they'd replaced the brother with Rob returning, and trying to help Lenni write a song. And if they couldn't do that, I would've bought into Lenni and Jamal, or Gaby and Jamal as the "new couple".
