I actually liked the show. I wanted to get a copy of that season on DVD.
It jumped the shark when actress Susan Gibney who played Maggie left. She was awesome.
Okay, the show needed work, and I didn't like it when Tim moved back in. But by definition, no show starring the fabulous Christine Baranski can jump the shark. I still occasionally watch Cybill, a lame-ass show if there ever was one, in reruns -- just to see Christine Baranski.
What does this show have in common with ABC's I'm With Her. Both were on at 7:30cst, both had a woman named Alex, both has a star from Cybil (Cybil Shepard guest starred in a two part IWH), and both are now cancelled. Neither were particular good, although I did prefer IWH. Happy Family, however, started out mediocre and ended blah. The most intriguing storyline, the middle son's affair with older Maggie, was jettisoned mid-season. After that, there was nowhere left to go. Even Melanie Paxton from the Glad commercials wasn't amusing enough. Hope she and John Larroquette and Christine Baranski find something better soon.
OK I'll make it quick: Happy Family jumped day uno. Why? basically it just wasn't good and a bore. Besides, It was only useful to watch during commercials of American Idol. Although it wasn't spectacular, I did like seeing Melanie Paxson (whom I refer to as "Joyce DeWitt's body double"-she played her in that 03 movie on Three's Company) doing something besides glad. Overall it was ok. By the way, I am using the past tense because as of May 19 2004 Happy Family was cancelled.
when the younger son and the neighbor ended the affair. (what happened, anyway? i missed that one.)
As the character Leonard Pinth Garnell (for all you 1970s SNL fans) used to say at the end of each sketch "Incrrreeedddibbbllly baaaaaaaaad. Love Baranski but she just can't pick a show, the always overrated Larroquette should hope his "Night Court" residual checks keep coming and the rest of the cast better start looking because this stinker simply can't last. Please, tell me.......it can't last?????
Tuesday the 18th with Randall's Gift. That kid that gifted the joint is very cool, and very talented. Now, we need to convince the writers to attach Randall to the daughter...to share the cool and create some genuine tension. So...what do others think?
If it weren't for the comedic talents of John Larroquette and Christine Baranski, this show would sink to the shark! The kids are just annoying: Sara has that squeaky cartoony voice that has annoyed me already in Glad commercials. Todd is just a typical player male who thinks it's okay to cheat on women. Tim is just a loser whose dimwitted nature is rarely funny. I don't know if the two principal actors are enough to carry this show. I don't see it lasting as long as something like "Frasier."
Right now it is the best thing in it's time slot...John is great...Christine a bit over the top...The kids do a good job...I think it is a unique situation...it is where my generation is right now...
Maybe the reason Sara can't find a guy is because of that annoying voice of hers. It's just as painful to the ears as Melanie Griffith's kewpi-doll voice. Get a dialect coach, hon. Also, isn't the actress that plays Sara in those Glad commercials (Don't get Mad! Get Glad!)?
Is not Baranski not the hottest woman on television? I would tune in and watch her read the phone book! Which might be better than watching this tired old format. With some good material this show could have a good run...but when are they likely to get good material? I'll keep watching but it is painful to see such a sexy and talented lady reduced to this.
First of all, John Larroquette and Christine Baranski can do much better than this. Caught the second episode last night which focused on the "weird", pathetic daughter Sara who can't find a guy to save her life. Besides the obviously mean-spirited undertone of the script which paints all singles as total losers, Sara seems content without a man and if she's happy the parents and brothers should all take flying leaps! They all act like Sara has some sort of contagious disease. NBC needs to wake up and realize they are alienating a large segment of the population with dreck like this.
I was interested in this show only because of John Larroquette and Christine Baranski, two very talented and funny actors. Plus, it had Jeff Davis from "Who's Line Is It Anyway." Then I watched the first episode. How standard! Parents who think their kids are successes and aren't. The oldest has a very-pregnant wife and a mistress on the side, the middle child can't get a date, and the youngest can't graduate junior college and moves in with the woman next door who's old enough to be his mother! (Two affairs in the first episode means a They Did It jump for me). Larroquette and Baranski are great, which is why this show didn't jump on Day One. But they need better material to work with!
It's a good show, a marginally bad script, but John Larroquete and Christine Baranski are great in it.
