I was also 4 years old in 1962, but I remember this was probably the first TV show that I realized was very bad. Even then I could tell that everything was simply an excuse to have the chimps causing havoc. "Hilarity ensues"
I am Gene Detroys grand daughter. His son lives in the UK and sadly turned out much the same as his father. His ex wife still lives in the UK and is 82 years old. I was not born until the late 60's but it's great to know his work was recognised over the years I have collected several films his chimps stared in
I also remember this show. Though I don't recall any of the story lines (I was only 4 when it was cancelled in 1962) I remember the chimps and that it aired Friday nights before The Flintstones. Concerning the cast I just learned another interesting piece of trivia. One of the regulars was played by Belle Montrose... Steve Allen's mother!
The trainer and owner was Gene Detroy ( I am his daughter ) thank you he past away a number of years ago, more devoted to the chimps than his kids. sad but true. In any case thank you it is great to know he was not forgotten.
I was also very young, but I loved those monkeys! I followed Peggy Cass on all those game shows in the sixties. Jack Weston-how could I forget him. Thanks for the memories.
To the above contributor: I guess I'm showing my age as well, because I, too, remember the Hathaways! I can recall Peggy Cass appearing in this show, however, I also could not remember the other cast members (besides the chimps). I consulted "The Great TV Sitcom Book" (which I purchased about 10 years ago - if it's still in print, it is a great reference tool for sitcom fans!). The show starred Jack Weston (a popular character actor who's appeared in about a million TV shows and movies) as Real Estate salesman Walter Hathaway. Peggy Cass played his wife, Elinore Hathaway. They cared for Enoch, Charlie, and Cindy - a family of performing chimps, played by the then-famous Marquis Chimps (as I remember, the Marquis Chimps were regular performers on a number of the variety shows that were popular at the time). It's not clear why the chimps were left in the care of Walter and Elinore. Harvey Lembeck (probably best known as biker "Eric Von Zipper" in the Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello beach movies) played the chimp's manager, Jerry Roper. Unfortunately, Jack Weston and Harvey Lembeck both died several years ago. Peggy Cass passed away in 1999 at the age of 72. Although she had considerable stage and movie experience prior to "The Hathaways", today she is best known for her work as a panelist on numerous game shows.
I'm showing my age, but in the early, early 60s (circa 1960), there was a show starring Peggy Cass called "The Hathaways." It joins the ranks of "Me and the Chimp" and "My Mother the Car" in setting low standards for tastelessness. However, as a 3-year-old tyke, I adored it and cried copious tears when it was cancelled midway through its first season. The premise was the Cass and her husband (have to look up the actor's name) had a troupe of performing chimps whom they raised and treated like children. Anytime you have chimps wearing clothes is disconcerting. It was my first "favorite TV show." Does anyone else remember it?
