Most of the acting was terrible, and the story made no f--king sense, but I actually loved this show and I don't know why! The song during the opening credits is great as well.
I watched the show and enjoyed it....but if you remember, its premiere was immediately following the Sopranos finale. I actually think that did it more harm than good. JFC was a show you had to follow closely and to a degree, ponder. It was positioned at a poor time...The whole time I watched the first episode, I was still thinking of Tony, Carmella and AJ in the diner....and the significance of Meadow's parallel parking.
The main point of television shows should be to entertain in some way. I watched this and figured it was HBO and everything they touch is usually gold but this show did nothing for me, I wasnt entertained. I wanted to justify it being "good" because it had to be right? It was an HBO originial....I hated all of the characters, especially the kid because he was terrible, he was like the robot on Small Wonder for crissakes. The other characters are like fingernails on a chalkboard. This was bad bad, beyond bad.
Day One. HBO has achieved the impossible- they have taken the worst dream you could have during a 104 degree temperature and were able to squeeze into an eight hour whirlwind of pointless pontification. The cast will discover that white out will be their friend when it comes to their resume. Rebecca DeMorney plays the mother to a son who is seven years younger than her (or something, it's on IMDB) - and that's probably the most convincing part of the show. The show is capable of making you hate surfers, motels, the sea, California, and basically anyone that talks. Stop letting insane people bring show concepts to the boardroom table and ask the viewers what they want. Why were we compelled to like the Sopranos? They were ruthless and brutal, but the STORY - that was the point. If I wanted rambling philasophical nonesense I could go to a play in the village and snap my fingers. My God, this show was beyond awful...
The question it never answered for me was "who the heck are all these Yost people and why should I care?"
Bring back DEADWOOD! Urgh this show was horrible.
Only thing left worth watching on HBO is THE WIRE,CURB, ENOURAGE (comming close the shark jumping, and their documentaries.
This show was excruciatingly boring. Period. It was a great idea that fell in love with itself too quickly. After the first three episodes, it just laid there and scratched itself.
For my money, this was the absolute best show HBO has ever put on the air. There are those of us who still enjoy thoughtful television instead of "oh look, that guy got hit in the balls, haha" or "that girl is so stupid, haha" mindless dribble. This was an original, thoughtful and redeeming show with endless qualities. Damn you to hell HBO.
To all JFC bashers all I can say is, "Idiots Rule." You are the same people who killed Twin Peaks"(which,by the way, is now considered a classic) Why don't you people go back to watching reruns of Friends and the ridiculous Supernanny.
Putrid mess. Rebecca DeMornay's character needed to smoke a doob or commit to an asylum.
Patience is a virtue. I LOVED this show because it made you pay attention. No line was without significance, but what that signicance was will never be revealed. Impatience is the hallmark of life in America. There are people who search for meaning in everyday life, there is no clear resolution after an hour, or half hour if it is a sitcom. For those who felt it was preachy or religious, that was never stated, but only your interpretation. I saw the creator on Letterman, I think, and he said that the signicance of ocean waves was that if the forces of the universe wanted to make contact, those waves would be a logical place for them to try. He was vague, intentionally, as to not influence thought or opinion regarding what the viewers took from the show. That's why they are surfers, ocean waves substitute for radio waves, or light waves. Who knows? That the exposition was slow was to keep the show going in one direction. If they tried to wrap it up in 1 season that would leave little or no room to continue for another. Philosophers spend a lifetime contemplating the meaning of life and you want all of the answers in 9 weeks? Forgiveness was amajor theme, for oneself and those around them. First you put your past in the past and then you head out to the future. I am so sorry that too few people were patient enough to see where this thing was headed.
I canceled HBO the day after the last episode. The show was refreshing, but in the end, it totally deserved its fate.
Somebody who had never seen it asked me to describe it and I said it's "Lost meets Dobie Gillis."
I watched the first few episdoes only for Ed O'Neill (who rules) but stayed aboard due to the weird dialogue. It was verbal chaos that sounded like ramblings of a street preacher: mostly incomprehensible, but with glimmers of twisted brilliance that made me want to sort the rest out. It wasn't always easy, but I'm glad I stayed for the whole run. Another season would've been great, but oh well. I thank HBO anyway for giving the show a chance.
i stopped watching it in the middle of the day seven episode. i don't care about shawnie or where he is. i'm hoping he was out taking acting lessons. rebecca demornay is a good actress but can't take her in this role. i think ed o'neil is the only one coming out of this smelling like a rose. teriffic job. hbo cancels carnivale and deadwood and gives us this crap. seriously considering cancelling subscription.
I loved this show if for nothing else by the end of an episode I would go "What the hell was that about?”.Then after watching it again being able to draw my own conclusions. Having aced Carnivale I realized that this show didn't have a chance. The real bad part about this is they probably won't bother putting it out on DVD. Leave to HBO to bow down to the masses...
