When he went to CBS. There have been some good moments here and there on his CBS show, but nothing was quite like Late Night on NBC. I used to count the days until the viewer mail episode. Couldn't wait for that.
the show changed...so what
try doing 5 hours of tv a week that makes people laugh.
he mostly succeeds

The show - the 80's show - jumped somewhere between when he stopped wearing sweaters & began wearing double breasted suit coats and loafers.
Dave was the best thing on TV late night from the morning show to the full run on NBC. When Chris Elliott and the other writers and characters (Larry Bud) left because of the switch to CBS the show was a sad awful shell. Dave's health and spirit went down hill when he went for the money. He was never going to be Johnny Carson, thank goodness. Paul use to do a parody of old Hollywood ass kissers now he just goes through the motions. Remember Chris Elliott doing Paul? Marlon Brando? the guy under the seats? Skylark the Chris Elliott impersonator? See him at his best here: youtube.com/watch?v=_QJ7SU7Jfq4&fmt=18
Dave's NBC shows never JTS in my opinion. Great stuff, my favorite show at the time.

After he moved to CBS it seemed to lose something though...the low-budget, surrealistic, 'outsider' charm began to erode as it slowly morphed into another glitzy Tonight Show talk clone.

Now it has degraded into another dull political-oriented show with some comedy tossed in. I'm not interested in him doing 'serious' stuff or hearing his political views, when I think Letterman, I picture intelligent comedy and fun.
Letterman was great 15 years ago! He has awful writers, acts and looks like he would be anywhere else but there on his show!! Craig Ferguson by far is the funniest host on tv. He is spontaneous, lively, and energetic. Pull the plug on Letterman and let Ferguson take over...now!!!
Dave is so much more subtly funny than the rest of the late night guys (Conan being #2). He truly possesses that comedic genius that I think many lack. To say that he has jumped the shark...I dont think so. If you think Leno is better than Dave, that shows just how simple minded you are.... Leno's jokes are dumb and obvious. His interviews are WEAK at best. All of his questions are "lobbed softballs." Letterman is not afraid to get into somewhat uncomfortable situations when interviewing guests. THAT is what makes for good late night TV!
Most nights are just painful anymore. Lame skits like the Calif Highway Patrol phone calls, walk on routines which are not funny at all and the not so amusing Osama hits, show a program greatly in need of revamping or burial.
when Dave lost his mid-west charm and became just another New Yorker
Letterman is still old and cranky. It amazes me that he is still on the air. Writers cannot make him not old and not cranky.
I find it interesting that Jay WITHOUT writers is much much better than Dave WITH writers. Did anyone really think that that Dave would improve the writing on his show just because they came back to work?
Wow! No one reads this! Just a note re writer's strike. 25 writers are responsible for the unfunny remarks of Letterman. Fire all of the writers!
Dave is Johnny's equal! Used to watch his morning show and remember when the set caught fire.
The show started sucking after the mid 80s. Dave, give it up.
Never jumped. He's gone skiing a couple of times, but he's never got near the shark.
