Never Jumped
The new woman
They Did It (Sean and the writer)
Shark Bytes
It absolutely jumped the shark when it changed from a great family drama into a sleazy soap opera for the last four episodes. I still miss this show and wish the powers that be hadn't wasted the last four episodes by turning it in to something nobody wanted to see.
I do not believe it ever jumped the shark. This was a good show that was never really given a chance. It didn't have the greatest time slot and UPN defiantely wasn't a good network for it to be on. I would love to see another incarnation of the show. There has never been anything like it, at least not in contemporary television. It would have been a perfect show for today's ABC Family.
I didn't like the addition of Charlotte Bentley, but I suppose it made for good drama. I did find it strange that Ned would be so naive with this woman, but she did take advantage of how much in his mind he wanted her to be another Libby.
As a huge Sean & Marita fan, I was taken aback by his fling with the writer, but at that time Marita seemed to make it clear that they could never be together. I was fortunate enough to be able to buy the entire series online from the company that produced it (Alliance Atlantis) and saw another version of the pilot, where Sean tried to kiss her and she refused and walked away. Perhaps he wanted some affection and I'm sure she could have brought drama for those two in the future. Maybe that is what the writers were thinking.
Also Marita's education was not unrealistic. She and her father were good friends with a rich and powerful family. So it is not unusual for Ned to make sure that his best friend's child got an education. She also did not go to college like Sean. Also, the time directly after the civil was suprisingly progressive. I believe there were some black congressman and senators for a short time after the war. Though, that changed very soon.
Great show with great heart, wonderful actors, great characters, just the wrong time, I think.

I agree it was in a bad time slot and it never was given a chance. Never jumped. It never had time to. I would like to see it on DVD too.
I really liked this show and have been trying to find out if it will be out on dvd anytime soon. I agree with the others who stated that it never jumped, but was just in a bad time slot. The scenery was beautiful, and as far as the relationship between sean and marita,it was not that uncommon for that period. Not every african-american during that period was an uneducated slave. I would have liked to see the show continue, but the network apparently did not. I hope it goes to dvd.
I loved this show and it had a great actress, Ely Pouget. It never had a chance they just yanked it off too soon. There are so many copycat TV shows on but this was one was different.
I never got to see this series but came to love the actor Grayson Mccouch from As the World Turns and wanted to see some of his earlier work..too bad i won't get to see this since no signs of releasing on DVD any time soon
Since they decided to cancel it which was ridiculous the least they can do is make it available on DVD for those of us that want it.
When Sean slept with the writer he met in Richmond. He'd just dumped Vivian like an episode or two before for Marita whom he said he loved - deeply. Then the next episode he's in bed with the woman he met in Richmond. I know sex ain't love, but c'mon. Him sleeping with the writer totally messed up my view of the relationship between he and Marita and how what he really felt for her.
This show never jumped shark, it was in a bad time slot and people didn't give it a chance!!! I do agree that the woman coming in who was going to kill the dad was a bad move, and they should have been a little more realistic with the love story between the the african american secretary and the cutie pie, gorgeous, hunkie son!! But overall I truly believe this was a good show. I wrote the network pleading for them to keep the show on when I got word that it was going to be canceled. I still to this day hate that it's gone, but I'm glad Sharon Leal (the african american secretary on the show)has moved on to Boston Public, which was also recently canceled. That is another excellent show that got put in a horrible time slot. I LOVED Boston Public, I was one of their biggest fans!!!!!
First show. I wanted to like this show. But, come on, this was supposed to be the 19th century south. The young white farmer and the "educated" black secretary are in love!?? They could have tried to inject a little more realism into the relationships instead of trying to put a 21st century twist on it.
The show went downhill when they brought the woman who would marry the father. She was scamming the poor family and was going to get the dad killed. You really need to get her killed or put out of the way. She's major trouble!!
This was one very entertaining show, and I am a little old to be watching just for the cute guys, it is a shame that UPN didn't do more to get this show seen. At least tried it in a different time slot, going up against Providence would have been hard for any show. I wish another broadcast co would at least take an interest in giving it another chance.
