Jumped when Ricky spanked Lucy - about as cringe inducing as it gets.
I will probably never watch a show as much as this one, and suspect it's true of many others. As a young, bored and lonely kid in the 60's whose absentee (in spirit) parents would let him watch as much TV as he liked before dinner(homework after starting in 3rd or 4th grade), watched it about 6 nights a week, probably saw each episode about 10 times. I suspect there are others of my generation who did much the same and it's interesting this will never happen again with other generations. Why? There are so many more choices for kids these days, 100's of channels, dvds, video games, the Internet, kids have more toys these days, young kids have more after school activities options, and in general I think parents are a bit more attentive than in my youth.
The times and the technologies have I believe forever altered the watch the rerun over and over phenomena of my day. Greater choice is usually a great thing and certainly in this case. The show was good, historic, but mostly thanks for being there night after night and entertaining enough to help fill some of the voids in a kids life.
I loved this show as a kid, but I really do not enjoy it anymore. It's about as canned and formulaic as sitcoms get (I will concede that the writing was often of a good quality). I Love Lucy is little more than a window offering a depressing view of 1950s America.
As a huge I Love Lucy fan, I have to stand by the majority and say that the show jumped the shark when they moved to the country. It was already showing signs of aging and unfunny plot lines in the 5th season but when they moved out during the 6th season that did it. It was sad way to see the show end, and even more sad to see them drag it out in the show's sequel The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. The show was definitely at it's best in the first 3 seasons, but got lost once they went "hollywood" and started doing trips, and eventually going country on us.
I'll never understand the people who say that Fred Mertz made the show. Really, if I wanna spend time with a fat, grumpy, unpleasant, unfunny, hands-shaking alcoholic, I'll just go visit my mom's side of the family.
I think I Love Lucy may just have JTS with the birth of Little Ricky (Desi Arnaz, Jr). It wasn't so bad when he was still a baby, but as he got older, the plot lines began revolving more and more around him and the show suffered as a result, IMHO. Bringing little kids on board a successful show is very often the kiss of death anyway, but when Little Ricky was featured playing the drums, he went from being a cute kid to annoying. At least he did with me. He was less annoying than Richie on The Dick van Dyke Show, but not by much.

And what was it with the Mertzes? Fred and Ethyl had to go EVERYWHERE the Ricardos went! I don't recall an episode where Lucy and Ricky went out somewhere that Fred and Ethyl didn't tag along. I understand they were an integral part of the cast, but still, you'd think they could do something without Lucy and Ricky. Even when they moved to Hollywood, here come the Mertzes!

Anyway, other than Little Ricky, I Love Lucy never jumped, IMO. A funny show.

Peace.
My daughter is 5yrs old and she loves I Love Lucy on Tvland that is her favorite show she plays Lucy and Ethel why can't there be shows like that they are good clean funny shows that I can let my child watch without having to worry about violence and langauge there will never be another lucy
As a child I absolutely loved this show. Two years ago I decided to purchase the DVDs, assuming that I would still have the same connection with the show that I did as a kid. Big mistake. I no longer found the show funny; indeed, it was often painful to watch. It wasn't just the social anachronisms that bothered me--the show at times simply insulted my intelligence. It was formulaic, repetitive, and often simply dull. "I Love Lucy" did have its moments (certain snippets of the dialogue still leave me in stitches), but overall I feel that it was an extremely overrated show.
I think it was great that they worked Lucy's pregnancy into the show. Lucy and Ricky loved each other and it stands to reason that they would have a kid. The kid is a product of their love. And the part when Ricky finds out that man who doesn't know he's going to be a father is himself while singing Rock a Bye Baby is priceless.
I Love Lucy remains one of television's most celebrated shows. How many series can you think of from the 1950s that airs six times a day? I thought the first season was dull, but seasons 2 - 4 were the best. The Hollywood shows were funny. The Europe shows were, besides the grape stomping show, mostly forgettable. The move to CT wasn't good as the relationship changed between the Mertzes and the Ricardos. The Ramsays were annoying and the final episode where Lucy poses as a statue was perhaps the worst moment of the series. All-in-all, it was a good show and made Lucy an international star. One of the few sitcoms that has good re-watchability.
Wow, the poster "Ricardo" must be a pis-sa-cree-a-teest (psychiatrist) as Ricky would say. IT WAS A TV SHOW. And tv shows generally don't mirror REAL LIFE! I believe it's called FICTION. Besides that, it was a comedy. I've watched it all my life, and know many young people who see it as nothing more than a funny show. The writing was brilliant, and the situations are still used in comedies today: wives vs. husbands (or men vs. women); couples vs. couples; friends vs. friends; crazy neighbors; the home and work environments as backdrops; the list goes on...and Desi helped develop the three-camera technique still used today. All the characters were given many memorably funny lines, and all worked so well together. Sure, some of the shows are better than others - true of any show - but no matter where the couples went (California, Europe), the comedy was still strong. And it's great to see some of the biggest stars of the era making guest appearances in the Hollywood episodes (John Wayne, William Holden, Van Johnson, etc.) and some stars just starting out (a young and gorgeous Barbara Eden in one Connecticut episode). This was true of Lucy's other shows as well: Carol Burnett, Milton Berle (and wife),Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton on "Here's Lucy." As with any show or any subject, there will be detractors, but Lucy was and is still funny after all these years, and I still get a laugh every time I watch it.
I really like I Love Lucy, but I can't stand when Desi Arnaz sings. He is by far the worst singer ever. He sounds tone deaf and he's just horrible. It's torture to have to listen to him sing, so I always mute him. I'd rather hear someone run their fingernails down a chalkboard.
Never jumped...never even hopped a bit. Great situational comedy. So many great episodes, so many laughs...a true classic in every sense of the word.
Fred Mertz (William Frawley) was the one that made the show. He was the ultimate misanthrope and his sarcastic remarks are some of the funniest lines ever spoken on TV.
