One of the best shows ever! End of story. May have semi-jumped when they went in the army but it was still hilarious. My favorite episodes were when Maynard was going to predict who would win the election between Kennedy and Nixon, one episode where Frank Faylen has a guitar slung around his shoulder and wailing away on a Rockabilly song called "Cool it Baby" sheer genius. Aw heck every show was classic.Doris Packard as Chatsworths mother was a scream, You Nasty Nasty boy. This needs to be released on Dvd.
I looked forward to Tuesday Weld in that first season. I was all of 9 years old, but felt Teenage after seeing her.
Note to JTS site owners. Very few people remember the actual name of this show.

I'm sure many poster/reviewers have looked for "Dobie Gillis" and had no luck find it, because even when it was first on TV everybody called it either Dobie Gillis or The Dobie Gillis show. Please list it under Dobie Gillis and you will see lots more votes and comments. Thank you.

p.s. I also wish Nickelodeon would put Dobie back into their lineup. It's missed by more than a few out here who can't stand to watch present-day series.
To this day I "borrow" Maynard's "Oh come now..." line to squelch phoney observations... works great. But only Bob Denver could deliver it perfectly.
This show was in a class by itself. The writing on the 1st couple seasons was excellent. I think they lost a writer or two before the last season.

But Dobie, Maynard, Dad & Mom - the acting was so brilliant they seemed like real people. Not the store-windown dummies who populate tv series these days - most of which I never watch. Early tv was a mixed bag - from stupid to really good - Dobie was in the really good category.

For the guy who was 5 at the time - very sorry for you - you maybe had to BE a teen or parent in the 50's to get the dialogue or feel of those times. I've often tried to immitate the style of Maynard's high-pitched terrified..."Work???!!!" Can't be done - he was absolutely HYSTERICAL.

TV since then has flushed itself right down the dirty toilet, sad to say.
A must-watch show when it first aired. Very fine writing in the early years that dumbed-down as t.v. matured. I have a hard time watching it now.
If you are a big fan of the show check out the movie "Rally Round the Flag, Boys" with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Dwayne Hickman, and Tuesday Weld.
Does anyone remember the so-so 1988 CBS-TV Movie "Bring Me The Head of Dobie Gillis?".This was one of the many so-ao reunion movies, which reunited original series cast members Dwayne Hickman, the late Bob Denver,(who SANG in the film),Shelia James,William Schallert and Steve Franken? The only thing the movie did was make a person long for the original series, which was a forgotten gem, that showcased the late Bob Denver, who was FAR better as Maynard G.Krebs than as Gilligan in the color episodes of "Gilligan's Island",and should be put on TVLand(but I doubt it),or better still,on DVD.
Not realy sure if it jumped ,Doogie (sic) et al
This was 50's TV. I was 5. who exactly was this tuned to? Jeez, there was only 3 networks!!! Lets see, Dobie Gilis , How to make a widget, Fun with clay.....HMMMM what would you watch?
Competetion made the 60's (! for the better?)
Never jumped. Dobie was one of the jazziest shows around. I started watching it in morning reruns in the 1960s. Didn't understand it much. Saw it later. Wow! First season was different from the others in many ways; last season was the weakest. Best were second and third. Writing, editing, musical cues, great characters. I miss it when it's not on TV somewhere and would really LOVE dvd collections.
I think, like, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis was a gas! I thought it was, like, smooth, man to watch. My favorite character on it, man, was like, Maynard G. (Walter) Krebs, big daddy. If you don't like it, that's like, ok. But don't diss it!
DOBIE...wants a girl that's dreameee, DOBIE...wants a girl that's screameee, DOBIE...wants a girl to call his ownnnn! Is she blond, is she tall, is she dark, is she small, is she any kind of dreamboat at all? No matter, he's hers and hers alone! 'Cause Dobie wants to have a girl to call his own! A funny show that jumped the shark when they joined the army. I thought Maynard was supposed to be a protester! Anyhow, Bob Denver was much better as Maynard than as Gilligan. The other characters were good too...Sheila James as Zelda, Warren Beatty as Armitage, Tuesday Weld (yowsa!) as Thalia, Dobie's parents (Frank Faylen and Florida Friebus) and of course, Dwayne Hickman as Dobie. And the theme song, with it's jazzy Big Band sound, was pretty good!
I sometimes wonder what The Many Loves Of Dobie Gillis would have been like if Michael J. Pollard had stayed on as Jerome Krebs and Warren Beatty had remained as Milton Armitage, Bob Denver degenerated into comedy relief and Chatsworth tended to be cartoonish saying HiHo, Everybody all the time, Behold my luxurious new sports car or something similar
I really wish Nick at Nite would put this back in the lineup. One of the all-time greats, and one that, frankly, I'm forgetting more and more all the time. But I still have many great memories, like Herbert T. Gillis's grocery store, which had the same paper signs for four years advertising things like "Salt 9 cents" and like that. How Herbert T., played by the great Frank Faylen, (Dobie's parents were played by Frank Faylen and Florida Friebus - how's that for an alliterative pair) talked about being in the big one, WW two, totally stolen by Archie Bunker. And how he would say, with all seriousness, but of course, not really, "I gotta kill that boy. I just gotta." Max Shulman, who created the stories way back in the early 1950s, is my all-time favorite writer, whose way with a phrase came through in this series. Having an English teacher named Mr. Pomfrit? Having a kid named Dobie? "Dobie, not Dopey." Funny, funny stuff. Definitely underrated, and one to bring back somehow, DVDs, Nick at Nite, please help!!!!
i would say Dobie Gillis J.T.S. when Bob Denver went from playing Maynard to Gilligan. In one story Maynard gets his beard stuck in a microphone, in another he gets all tied up in shoelaces trying to put on his shoes, if that isnt Gilligan, what is. Maynard had two soulmates in that series, One was Edwina Kagel played by Lynn Loring in Back to Nature Boy, Miss Loring is still alive today and has a number of tv roles she played according to the internet movie database, another showed up as Venice in Soup and Fish, i dont know who played her it was either Iris Mann or Phyliss Standish
I don't even remember the Army episodes, so I guess I stopped following Dobie at some point. Maybe it's just as well. And I must have missed Warren Beatty also. When I saw it, there was still Tuesday Weld (what a hottie!) as Thalia, and Steve Franken was playing Chatsworth. Sheila James was Zelda, with Frank Faylen as the Dad (Herbert) and Florida Friebus as Mom (Winnie). And Denver of course as Maynard. But is there any question that this was inspired television?? It was WAYYYYYY ahead of its time, but that doesn't make it any less good. This was a smart show written by smart people, with tongue kept firmly in cheek the whole time. It's amazing it lasted 4 years--it must have been an accident that some pinhead network executive didn't pull it off the air. If Dobie JTS, it did so after I stopped watching. Oh yeah, what about William Schallert (Patty Duke's "Dad") as the smart, cool and reasonable teacher Mr. Pomfret?? Classic TV. We'll never see its like again. And to those Denver-bashers: there's no argument that he sucked as Gilligan, but as Maynard G. Krebs he created an indelible and original TV character.
When Dwayne Hickman's hair went brown from blond. That was when there was no more Falia and the rich guy played by Warren Beatty. I loved Maynard though, every time you say work and he cringes.
