I think somewhere in the last season things went sideways. They quite obviously brought in some directors that worked on MIAMI VICE. They put a grittier, dark filter on the lens. Nothing seemed to happen in the daytime anymore, always at night and a lame PHIL COLLINS soundtrack started to play in the background. I'm thinking specifically of the episode arc with Frank Sinatra. It wasn't Magnum anymore, it was an episode of Miami Vice. Defiantly Jumped.
Also some lame episode about "Raiders of the lost ART?!" We know that Tom Selleck was offered the Indiana Jones role but had to turn it down for Magnum commitments. This was neither clever nor funny, just sad.

Great Show up until that point, though

i saw a one episode when magnum and some mates jumped out of a plane to do some sky surfing, when he pulled his shoot it tangle up, he saw his life as flashbacks just before he hit the water.

Did he live or die? dunno the episode ended and never saw it again!

Hey WGN, can you give "Matlock" or "Murder,She Wrote" a rest and put Magnum back on reruns, Monday-Friday???

What's the deal with Sleuth Channel? They only play the first couple of season (dec 80-about late 82). One day I saw an 83 but then they start over at 80 again. Did this several times. They have never play mid-late 80s. Really annoying that there is nothing after early 83.

Watching this show was mandatory for hoping to get a glimpse of Tom Selleck's hairier than hairy chest! Every week I pined for the display of manliness I hoped I would see in all of its glory! What a beaty that Selleck was in his heyday was! If only more men were created like that!

I havent seen the final episode of this show, but I am a huge fan of the first 5 series.

That being said, I heard that in the final episode Higgins pretends to be Robin Masters in order to fool Magnum for some reason. At the end of the episode Higgins flips it all around and claims that he was only pretending to be Robin in order to accomplish some crazy goal. After its all over it still leaves the audience with the impression that Higgins WAS infact Robin Masters the entire time.

Obviously Higgins was Robin Masters, all the while fooling Magnum, Rick , and TC throughout the entire series. His tendency to ramble on about his experiences in the military with that kind of exacting English vocabulary that only a genius writer could. As well as his well known memoirs about his life and times, more proof of the possibility that he could write complex Ian Flemming type mystery suspense novels. Also the shows typical theme of Magnum always getting over on Higgins, or one of the guys getting one over on Magnum makes it only more believable that Higgins did infact have the greatest con the whole time!

Great show, great writing, It did'nt jump the shark. Bellisario is a genius! He also created Airwolf in the 1980's, which was nowhere as cool as Magnum but still neat.

Show never jumped. The one thing I've noticed watching the series on DVD is that it holds up because of the relationships between characters. That was very well done.

In response to the comment about homosexual subtexts due in part to the short shorts....Were you alive in the 80's? Shorts like that are an embarrassing relic of that decade, but they didn't insinuate sexual orientation back then.

A copple of people here don't now what they are talking about. Magnum, P.I. is one of the best shows in the 80's and i think this show is still great. Here i'm 15 years old, living in the Netherlands and gues... I'm a big Magnum fan, i even started a Dutch fansite for the serie and this all came in a local newspaper here.

The show is great, not cheap. It include's great storylines, great characters and a lot more. Of course there were some episodes that could be better.. But that's quite normal if a show runs for 8 years.

Before some guys here are going to judge about Magnum, P.I. you should watch it, and judge than. Do research before you tell something like a fact!

It never jumped and never came close. Yes, there were some corny episodes, but that will happen in a show that runs as long as Magnum did.

This show never cheated us, it kept the flow moving forward with natural development. I often wonder how long the show would have gone had the Cosby Show not affected Magnum's ratings?

Eight years didnt seem to be enough.

This was one of the BIG shows in Holland in the 80s. Loved it! Great show! I would go for: never jumped!

What a fantasy series this one was! Man lives on an estate on the beach in Hawaii, drives around in a red Ferrari, all for free, and goes on a new adventure with a different beautiful woman each week. The flashback episodes associated with combat in Vietnam were boring and not consistent with the rest of the series. Aside from that, it followed the typical detective series format where the lead character either
stumbles into a case by accident, or is hired by some strange acting, wealthy person to find a missing relative or recover a priceless stolen artifact. The episode where Rick dressed like a Japanese girl to perform in the play on the estate was silly, though. And Magnum didn't always have his gun with him when confronted by the bad guys, and most tv detectives usually carry their guns with them everywhere they go. The show stayed fresh through the end, and essentially wrapped up the 'crime in paradise' premise which began with Hawaii 5-0 some 20 years earlier.

Never Jumped. Continuity almost flawless. Story line followed all the way (but I love the inconsistancy trivia) As a Air Force Intel officer in 1980 I was fascinated. I left the service 3 times and came back in to finish my career and retire from Active Duty. Magnum in the last episode joined to finish up his career and get married. I got married while on a tour in Hawaii. I live in the tidewater area of Virgina (where Magnum grew up.) For the last 14 years, with a few trips to SW Asia interspersed, as opposed to SE Asia as Magnum did, I have had a good life. Damn't, why couldn't I have had Selleck's good looks too?

You know with this show I could always on count on it. I think it was on opposite A-Team on another network on Tuesday or Thursday nights. I caught it later in reruns when I was older and I could always be brought back to times that I was in HS. I loved the characters and the concept. Magnum really never changed who he was. It was also nice to see a show about Vietnam Vetrans doing postive things.

Magnum PI is not a cheap show. Do you have any idea how much a Ferrari and Helicopter, not to mention all of the other cars, boats, houses and utilization of high end realestate in Hawaii cost? This show never jumped, it is great. I admit that the first 4 seasons are better than the rest though. The high budget for this television program is one of the reasons it is so great. There were many shows with big budgets in the 1980's. Great time in history!

Never jumped. And yeah, some of the episodes are awful, but some are the best that tv has produced. Allof the acting is top notch and you get a feeling that these people are real, not actors. This is the hallmark of a quality show. Even the theme song is great. It's my ringer on my phone! And it's an '80s show, not '70s.
