nero wolfe (a&e version w/ timothy hutton) is the finest tv show ever produced. it ranks in the rarefied air of perry mason and mission impossible. the only regret is that there are not more episodes. this show never jumped.

beautiful costumes and set, wonderful primary actors and repertory players. beautiful femme fatales, great story lines, well directed. a feast for the senses.
Timothy Hutton showed he had the potential to be a great series lead in this stylish, very entertaining show. Archie Goodwin is a great character, but one with limited emotional range. With a richer character to play, Hutton could wind up in the TV big leagues with Kiefer Sutherland and Hugh Laurie. Hutton is supposed to have expressed some interest in playing Ellery Queen, the character his father once portrayed. In the books the character of Ellery Queen gets darker and darker as the series progresses. The role could be a great fit for Hutton if written with enough depth. If Timothy Hutton does decide to play Ellery Queen, he would be crazy not to get the same production team that he worked with on "Nero Wolfe". They managed to create some real TV magic with that show.
Archie drugs Wolfe, so that he can remove his clothing without his knowledge, as part of a plot to clear his name.
I would have thought more people were watching the current Nero Wolfe on A&E Sunday nights. It is a very intelligent, well-done mystery, great setting within its time period, always keeps me guessing as to who the murderer will turn out to be, and has some very clever comic moments if you are paying attention. I especially like the way the characters within each show are developed and then the same actors play entirely different characters in the next show. On the other hand the characters of Wolfe, Archie, the police captain and Fritz are wonderfully consistent from show to show, becoming increasingly lovable as their character foibles resurface each week. I was afraid it might jump when Archie planned to get married, but thank goodness his intended got murdered first (or was she the murderer – can’t remember.)
This is more of a 'reverse' jump. It Jumped 'before' it made it to A&E. The 'New' Nero Wolfe on A&E has never jumped and I expect it to never jump. Because of the effort of Hutton and the production staff, it is one of the best shows on TV today. They have done a wonderful job of keeping it as accurately as possible for the time period it was to represent. The storylines are very well done. The cast of actors do a wonderful job. The cast extras do a great job in portraying a host of characters. The scenery, costumes, music, autos, and sets is superbly designed to be near historically accurate as possible. It has the best blend of humor, intrigue, and style.
Rex Stout must be retching in his grave (d. 1975). I had never heard of the character before seeing this show and thought the idea of a contemporary version was a nice touch. A&E may yet get the chance to see it move into the modern era, if what I've seen here is any indication. But then it might have to be called Nero Wolfe Jr. (after a cousin or nephew), and I don't think mosh pits would work.
The new Nero Wolfe on A&E hasn't jump yet. I was glad to see somebody besides myself has seen the new version. i think Timothy Hutton has done a create job producing this new version. I like how the treat like a playhouse with the same actors playing other "guest" roles for each episode. I was a little concerned when the changed from the 50s to the 60s in the second season but it seems to be working.
Was flawed from beginning because it tried to do what the books did and keep Wolfe in modern times. But the right approach (see the Nero Wolfe cable series on A&E) was to put the show back to the beginning and make it vintage.
The show was on NBC in 1981 or so. Conrad played the reclusive sleuth Nero Wolfe. Lee Horsley of Matt Houston fame played Wolfe's trusty sidekick, Archie Goodwin sans moustache. The show jumped when Horsley grew a moustache and became Matt Houston on ABC.
