WHEN THEY ADDED THOSE DUMB COMEDY SKITS IN BETWEEN SEGMENTS LIKE WHEN DRACULA ROBS THE BLOODBANK A LONDON BLOOD BANK I THINK AND ONE WHERE LINDSAY WAGNER WAS AN ENGLISH ARCHEOLOGIST
when GARY COLLINS CAME ON AS A "GHOSTBUSTER" IT WENT DOWNHILL FAST
Pickman's Model is one of my favorites. The early NG episodes were usually super. It's only toward the later ones, when Serling was knocked out of control of his baby, that the show wound up with "huh" endings, and slipshod production values. Then cutting up the episodes to sell more commercials really put a dent in it, much like the 3 Stooges eps that were butchered repeatedly to add more sell time. Thank god for DVD.
This show plays on the Chiller network now in its original format. I agree that it's a mixed bag. Some are really, really good as far as the scripts and character acting, and I've already seen them more than once. Some are lame, though, because their endings make little sense or there's a bit of overacting and cheesy direction. I avoid the Sixth Sense episodes entirely. If I wanted to see that show (and I never have) I certainly wouldn't watch Night Gallery to.

That wasn't the last time that happened, because Tales From The Crypt also incorporated a series into its own. A few episodes that The Cryptkeeper presented were from a would-be anthology that never got picked up by a station. They're kind of easy to pinpoint because they have no horror in them, like the war story with Kirk and Eric Douglas. That was more seamless, though, sense those episodes don't have a recurring character in them. That Sixth Sense idea was so dumb, proves the execs had NO sense.
My friend Gene Woolfolk has a sort of "Twilight Zone" party every night, as anyone who happens to show up watches the latest Sci-Fi Channel re-run with him, then spend the next hal hour or so discussing the stories, the cool guest stars ("The Old Man in the Cave" with James Coburn right after the episode where Lee Marvin boxes a robot was a mind blower for me!) the wonderfully 1960s /film noir/, and of course the genius Rod Serling himself... which leads me here, to the only slightly (imo) flawed later masterwork, Night Gallery, which from time-ro-time we end up talking about... episodes I haven't seen in close to 30 years still vividly remain in my memory, and still give me an abstract, detached fear: the "green fingers", the "shadow on the wall", the "sin eaters"... and the reminder, long forgotten, of when NG JTS: the idiodic idea of cobbling episodes of the bland Sixth Sense series into "Night Gallery episodes". Did this stupid idea fool anyone?
Hey Sasha, the movie you are trying to find is Trilogy Of Terror. It had three movies in one. It starred Karen Black.
Night Gallery jumped when it added Gary Collins and those abominable ESP episodes. Yeesh...those were horrible. Yeah, I know there were some clunkers (mostly during the "comedy" shorts) during the earlier shows but they were on average very well done. (The one with the medical bag from the future starring Burgess Meredith was a gem as well as "Flip Side of Satan" and the meremaid episode.) The show would have been a classic had it not added Gary Collins.
The utterly asinine and stupid, and unfunny "Night Gallery"alledged "comedy "vignettes (NOT-I repeat -NOT written by Rod Serling -blame these on other people)made the comedic episodes of the original black and white CBS classic "The Twilight Zone"(Rod Serling's"Mr.Dingle, the Strong",Richard Matheson's"Once Upon a Time",and Rod Serling's "A Kind of Stop Watch")look like Shakespeare.
Hi. I don't know if I am right but is there an episode from night gallery that has some kind of doll that comes to life with water and tries to kill a women? I was very young when I saw this and I think it was from night gallery. I have been trying to find it with no luck. It looks tribal like and she kills it in the oven. Please if anyone knows e-mail me. Thank you.
(This episode still remians in my mind)
Sasha
If you ever get a chance or go to a used book store, there are two very good books, called "Night Gallery" and "Night Gallery 2",and feature stories from the series "They're Tearing Down Tim Riley's Bar","Lindemann's Catch,"Make Me Laugh","Clean Kills and Other Trophies","Pamela's Voice","The Messiah on Mott Street",and where these versions differ from the versions you see on the show,is that they are the ORIGINAL versions, written by Rod Serling-AND NO ONE ELSE.These were published AFTER the series ended. And I agree with the poster below-I read the original story for the "The Ring With the Red Velvet Ropes"called "The Ring With the Velvet Ropes",and the ending was different-In the original story,at the end,his wife says to the champ that Roderick Blanco hanged himself on the velvet ropes. But in the episode,at the end,Blanco is very much alive and is seen in training. And yes,I agree that the "Sixth Sense"episodes(which were ORIGINALLY 60 minutes in length-This is 100%true-and no,I am NOT defending them),and the chopped up "Night Gallery" episodes, caused it to jump the shark bigtime.
I liked Night Gallery. About the episode "Silent Snow, Secret Snow" After I saw that episode on Night Gallery, they played an earlier version of that story as a film in school. I don't know who starred or narrated that original film. I admit that some of the episodes I didn't get at the time, the twists or the meaning, but I liked Joanna Pettit. I think she appeared in the most episodes (not counting the Sixth Sense episodes with Gary Collins). I kinda liked the short comedy episodes but I was a kid at the time. I still get a kick at Marty Allen playing Edgar Allen Poe. I read the original story for the episode "The Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes" and unlike the Night Gallery Episode it's ending left us guessing as to what the boy saw. In my opinion, the scariest episodes were the ones without a supernatural or sci-fi occurance, like "Room With A View".
This message is for the previous poster. The movie is "Something Evil" a made for TV movie fron 1972 starring Sandy Dennis, Darren McGavin and Ralph Bellamy. It is a story of a couple who moves into a house owned by the Devil. It was never an episode on Night Gallery.
I'm trying to figure out the name of a movie. I would like to have a copy of it. Unsure if it was on Night Gallery or what. In the movie they were trying to film a TV commercial on a porch. They had distortions in their mics they could not get rid of. It was a candybar commercial I think. It involved a mendallion of the "Star of David". The devil or whoever it was with the red eyes in the window behind the porch, scared the crap out of me. they hung medalions on the mikes, they got rid of distortion, then saw the red images in the window of the house when editing the commercial. I'm 46,and thrillers involing windows has always givien me cold chills.
Sins Of The Fathers, by far, is the most horrifying thing I have EVER seen on the screen - big or small. This is not an exaggeration, either. You must see it to understand the level of physical discomfort involved.
"Night Gallery"was a poor man's "Alfred Hitchcock Presents",and a very poor man's the original "The Twilight Zone".HOWEVER,there WERE several episodes which were very similar to the original "The Twilight Zone",and were both better than average, and both written by Rod Serling. These were "The Caterpillar",and final season's "You Can Come Up Now,Mrs.Millikan.",which starred Ozzie and Harriet Nelson as a madcap but nice inventor who is scorned by the scientific community, and tries his latest experiment on his wife.Well, anyway, she falls asleep and dies(or so everyone thinks),he dies and later on,and she,to her nephew's horror, wakes up and the look of horror on her nephew's face when he realizes what has happened,is scary indeed .Except for these 2 shows,it's too bad that "Night Gallery"didn't live up to its excellent pilot film.
