This was a smart show with some terrific casting. Dixie Carter as April seems like the protype for Samantha on Sex in the City. She could also get more laughs without saying a work. Holland Tylor was also wonderful and is still playing nearly the same character 30 years later on Two and A Half Men. I was lucky enought to go to a couple of the tapings of the show which was filmed in New York City.
On Our Own never jumped. This is one of those shows that deserved to last longer than 1 season. Bess Armstrong & Lynne Greene were perfect buddies & I could count on laughing at least 2 or 3 times per show. Dixie Carter was also there (before she hit the big time on "Designing Women"). I remember a particular scene where Bess Armstrong is in bed reading a book. She is holding the book up & it's "The Fan" by Bob Randall. Mr. Randall produced the series as well as having a small role in it. Nice product placement, Bob!
I'm glad someone else remembers this show! I absolutely loved it and was sorry when it got canned. I still remember the great theme song: "We've got a way of looking at life that's really great. A special way of thinking life is fine. Got it all together, take a look at me; I'm feelin free, a brand new me - We're on our own! We're on our own!"
This comedy lasted only one season in 1977. It starred Bess Armstrong and Lynne Greene as two women in their 20s starting out in New York. Armstrong was like a young Mary Tyler Moore. It also co-starred Dixie Carter as a comic vamp. She was hilarious and nothing like Julia Sugarbaker. The only time I saw Greene again was when she occasionally played Dorothy Zbornak as a young woman in flashback sequences on Golden Girls. She sure had Bea Arthur pegged.
