The late Sam Whipple was great. This show was based on the British show "Open All Hours" and that was a pretty good show too.

I wish it had caught on, but I can understand why it didn't, it definately appealed to a niche audience.
this show was great.i clearly remember in one episode where sthe sons girlfriend breaks up with him. it is his turn to be at the regsister and he cant be found. his father goes into his room to look for him calling out his name. a quivering disembodied voice from under the bed asks, amber? is that you? i always remembered the name of the show, but could not find any reference to it until i came across your web sight.
I've been searching for DVDs or tapes of this series for years. IT was hilarious!
NEVER jumped. That was a great show.

Hopefully it'll be out on DVD sometime soon.
It got silly when the Milkwoman was in it, then it got good again. Granville never does find out if he's Hungarian or not. Although as most Hungarians I know are tall and blond and he is short and dark I doubt it. Maybe he is Bickerdikes after all?
Perhaps one of the funniest TV shows ever. Right up there with the best episodes of "I Love Lucy"; the only comedys that had me rolling on the floor laughing so much it hurt. Someone has the episodes locked up somewhere and IMHO they need to be released. J.T., you can do it. The good people at ABC won't mind.
This was a late night hit in Australia where it quickly developed a cult audience. It mysteriously stopped being broadcast and that was it. I wish I would have taped it because I'm not sure if it will come out on DVD.
I remember watching this show when I was a kid(though I have trouble recalling any of the epsiodes I saw). Even today, I can't understand why it didn't have a longer run.
is this based around the british sitcom open all hours which starred ronnie barker and david jason as a greedy shop keeper and his bullied nephew .it ran on uk tv for four series due to the perfprmanes of two of the uks comedy geniuses.
In one scene, the convenience store owner/dad discovered his slacker son sleeping in the ice cream/frozen food freezer bin. Dad: "Why are you lying in the freezer?" Son: "I'm not lying, I admit that I fell asleep in the freezer." Stupid, yes, but I used this "I'm not lying, I admit that I'm sleeping in the freezer" line out-of-the-blue a few years ago in a bar and connected with lady who also remembered the show. Great night.
It never jumped..I wish I could watch it today..Actually I'm just glad to see someone else remembers this show.
Never jumped. Another example of unappreciated genius. My favorite subplot was where some guy was wearing swim fins and playing the saxophone outside the store, tapping his foot/fin back and forth to keep the beat. To this day, every time I put on my fins, I tap my foot and wish i could play the saxophone.
Day one...But one question. Was it not Bubba Smith on this show who said a line (that I must admit I use rather frequently)..."People can change, ten years ago I was a skinny little white kid from Cleveland"...?
This really was a hilarious show, from the same production team responsible for "The Bob Newhart Show", with that show's kind dry, warped humor. I wouldn't mind it's quick cancellation so much if only TV Land or somebody would make a home for it, maybe in the vicinity of 3 AM--I'm not picky.
This show was excellent. Sam Whipple and Susan Tyrell together at last. You just don't forget a combination like that. The last great episode was when Susan's characters in-laws came to stay for the weekend. They brought lawn chairs, and pretzel salad, and smoked constantly. This show would do great on MTV or Comedy central now. It was simply ahead of its time as Susan Tyrell and Sam Whipple are, generally. We will never see the likes of this again.
