I loved this show. it should have never have been cancelled. with all the crap tv out there, it would have been nice to have a refreshing sitcom around. do you know of any online store where you can buy cancelled tv shows?
This show was ill-conceived from the beginning. At the end of run of "Cheers" it looked like they were setting up Rhea Perlman to be the star of a successor sitcom with new husband, Eddie Le Bec, played by Jay Thomas, and her kids from her previous marriage to Nick Tortelli. The show would have probably been appropriately called "Carla" and would have revolved around her home life instead of the bar. Apparently, Rhea Perlman didn't want to always be known as "Carla Tortelli" so they killed that concept and quickly came up with "Pearl." Even guest spots by former Cheers alum Ted Danson and Rhea Perlman's real husband, Danny Devito couldn't save this one.
i just want to pay homage to the late Malco;m McDowell, star of such cult classics as A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and OH LUCKY MAN!, and also TIME AFTER TIME, GETTING CRAZY, IF, CALIGULA, and BLUE THUNDER. he was a great actor with such promise. (no, he didn't die... worse! he costarred on a lame sitcom with Rhea Perlman)
It JTS the minute the first "He's standing right behind me, isn't he?" joke appeared.
Well, it's unanimous so far--DAY ONE. Personally I LOVE McDowell in ANYTHING (though he will rightfully be remembered for Clockwork). In fact, HE was the only reason I deigned to watch a show starring - yeck- Rhea Pearlman! This one-note 'comedy' made meCRINGE. Rhea should have her union cards revoked and should never be allowed to appear in front of a camera (ANY camera--even a poloroid) again. Does her director husband Danny DeVito use her in any of his works (not that I can recall--though I don't blame him!). One of the WORST actors in the universe--right down there with the Landers sisters, The Nanny, and Kevin Sorbo.
As Alexander De Large asked the bum in A Clockwork Orange "Oh, and what's so stinking about it?" When it comes to Pearl, everything was stinking about it! More for the gloopy rather than oomny ones.
Of course his character was unlikable. There is only one role that Malcom McDowell has had that matters and that is of Alexander De Large in the cinematic classic A Clockwork Orange. I would have loved to have seen him enter the classroom wearing a bowler hat, one eyelash, long johns and a cane. "Come and get one in the yarbles! If you have any yarbles ya eunnuch jelly thou!"
I agree! And Malcolm McDowell's character was so unlikeable, it just about ruined the show.
It had a premise that *could* have been terrific - about a middle-aged widow fulfilling her lifelong dream of getting a college education but , in spite of the ever-appealing Rhea Perlman playing the title character, it turned out to be a rather dull show with her seeming to only be taking ONE course given by Malcolm McDowell! The only good episode was when they had Billy Connolly guesting as McDowell's uncoventional, ultra-Scottish brother! Other than that it know whether to be a show about academic McDowell vs. the 'uncultured' Pearl, Pearl vs. her self-absorbed son and flakey sister-in-law ,etc.
