I'm a Marine Veteran and I liked the first season. While there were a lot of liberties taken, the first season showed how different elements of the Marine Corps operated to accmplish a mission and the story lines were more believable. The show JUMPED THE SHARK when season 2 kicked in and the producers decided to do a "Melrose Place" meets "Top Gun" makeover of the show. Even the episode titles weren't original! "SOCEX" and "CarQuals?" What were they trying to pass the latter seasons as, documentaries! The new cast and characters left something to be desired aswell. I saw every ep of the first season and was glad I was too busy becoming a REAL MARINE OFFICER for the latter seasons.
This show was so bad on many levels. Writing was juvenile by people with no understanding of the Navy, flying or the military. The show was a disgrace to Pensacola with its Naval aviation history. They should have called the show The OC Flyboys. This show demonstrates the absolute rock bottom quality of Hollywood TV writers. I think these Hollywood writers have a set of bad stories they rehash over and over and over again. Does this sound familiar – Bad guys still secret guidance chips – Bad guys still some plutonium – Bad guy drug dealers do something bad – Bad guys develop some bad virus/drug/chemical – Flashback to something bad in Vietnam. No need for original thinking in Hollywood, just pull out your copy of “Hollywood Bad Plot guide”, pick one, insert the characters from the show you are working on, and you are done.
Show was great until Kenny Johnson left. It would have stayed good if they would have replaced him, but they never did, instead they started a revolving door of characters.
Although Kathryn Morris is hot with her lean body and short do. There is but one Sandra Hess. I was happy to se Spoon and Burner leave. Not only terrible characters but terrible actors
This show jumped from the first scene they shot. They tried to combine Top Gun with Navy SEALs or some other really cool commando unit. It doesn't work. They've got the same character flying an FA-18 in one scene and kicking down a door with an assault rifle in the next. Believe me, the Marine Corps would not let its highly trained(to the tune of several million dollars worth) pilots do infantry and special forces stuff. Those guys fly. Thats all they do. This is like GI Joe(cartoon version) live action where all the characters can operate all the equipment. One minute Duke's flying a jet, the next he's driving a tank. Give me a break.
When Kenny Johnson left the show. His character, Burner, was a "real - life" character, one with real problems most of us could relate to. That, and the show tried to take on "current issues", as opposed to being a show about three people following their dream to fly.
Never jumped, although I was confused by the switch from commando squad to a TV remake of Top Gun. Brolin must have been awaiting permission to film at Miramar, NTC, and MCRD. If there was one weakness, it was the casting. The character of Ice was cast correctly. I think she did a damn fine job, and obviously she studied real life aviators and no doubt swallowed her pride when they made the ep about about the actress studying the aviators. I never cared for burner or spoon. The miscasting made the characters unlikable. The addition of Ali Landry was a stroke of genius. The rare use of that TOTAL babe who played Brolin's daughter was a setback. Much more of her in season one than two. What I would've paid to see her lock lips with Ali, but I digress. I found the series to be like an extended version of Officer and a Gentleman. I was stationed at MCRD for 3 years so I enjoyed the scenes they shot there. It's a shame this wasn't a prime time TV series. I feel that it was much better than most of the crap on today.
I'm not really sure if this show even needed to jump the shark. The veteran who pointed out the inaccuracies and lack of realism was right on target, this show depicted naval aviation about the same way "I dream of Jeannie" depicted NASA and the Air Force. What's worse is the person who admired this crap as a learning tool about the Navy and valuable to his/her desire to be a naval aviator. As another Navy veteran, I'm sorry to have to burst that bubble, but this show stunk from the first episode, as did so many stupid shows which were military based. Bad soap operas have done better.
This show jumped when the new cast came on board! I used to work for a network and my first time airing Wings of Gold was my first time watching it. It was actually mission related for the most part! And to solve the problems.. they blew things up! It was kinda like a modern day A-Team! Every character did something unique! Then one season I put in the cassette and BAM! Losers who do nothing but fail entry exams and worry about where they are going to live! Don't they have barracks?? Or at least on base quarters? Even though we got to see more T & A, that didn't help it in the end from taking the nosedive it brought upon itself! They show should've gotten a tone lock on it's creative thinking and let loose with full barrage! That's just my opinion... I could be wrong.
i have been watching the show for a while and i dont think that it has jumped the shark!! it is very educational for those of us who are interested in the military and it is one of the best military shows that i have seen!!! who cares if its not filmed in the city it says, how many tv shows do u know that actually DO film in the city that they say!!!! this is a show where u have to want to see it and just cant wait until it comes on!!! its a show that teachs u about the inside ropes of the military and i frankly adore it!!! i have learned sooo much from it and this is coming from a future aviator!!! i hope that this show does not get made fun of anymore but instead watched and understood for what it is!!! just actually sit down and watch it MORE THAN ONCE
I can watch a television show and suspend disbelief for a while, but what the hell was the Navy thinking when they decided to back this turd??
Between seasons 1 and 2, the entire cast and all of their characters were let go. Except, of course, James Brolin who just happens to be a producer of the show.
This had to be one of the most ridiculous script meeting ever. They don't even bother to shoot it in the actual city it is set in. I agree that it is incredulous to insinuate that Pensacola has mountains and desert. I grew up there and they don't even have these kinds of units there. At least they could add some reality to the show by putting in some cameos of the Blue Angels, who are based there. And I have a question about this and other "military" dramas. How the hell do they get away with not wearing hats outside? Almost all of these kinds of shows routinely show servicemen without hats outside, wearing them inside, or having their sleeves rolled up completely wrong. Sorry to be picky, but it kinda riles a veteran when they leave these and other details out.
The opening credits show these planes flying over mountains and deserts. Pensacola and it's Navel Air Station is on the Gulf Coast of Florida!!! I grew up in Pensacola, Florida. There are no mountains in Florida, there are no deserts in Florida. This stupid show is filmed in California and they don't even try to fake it.
The episode when "burner" decided he couldn't fly anymore because something from the heavens helped him to fly back to the ship, so he left.
