I liked the guy , his death was a tradegy.
This show never had the chance to go sailing over the big fish because it was on for only a few episodes. I caught this show when I was about 10 or 11 years old and I was hooked. I loved this show and Ray Vitte was a big reason why I watched it. He was like the comic relief of the show. The guy made me laugh. When the show suddenly disappeared I was upset and then I read some time later that Vitte died and that made me even more upset. The only way they could've went on with this show is if they had discovered a young Eddie Murphy before SNL did. I don't know if the show was cancelled because of Vitte's death. At the time I assumed it was. All I know is that while it was on it was my favorite tv show and it ended even before it could get an ounce of popularity through word of mouth and that was a shame. Vitte could have become a popular tv star from this. He was funny and likeable. Its too bad. R.I.P. , dude.
Didn't jump -- when did it have time to? Cancelled too quick. Y'know I can still sing the theme song? LOVED this show. Could've been reinstated without Ray Vitte. Perry King and Noah (Beery? was that his name) were enough for me.
Only ran a few episodes, and just when it was starting to hit its stride, ABC cancelled it. For a kid in middle school, a great night of TV: Tales of the Gold Monkey and The Quest. Held out hope they'd bring it back but after the one actor died I gave up hope.
This show never jumped. It didn't have the chance! Is this the show I remember watching when I was about 5 or 6? Something about a group of 4 people who are somehow competing for a chance to become a prince/princess? I don't know why I thought this was such a great show. It shouldn't've been cancelled because they really could've carved a niche in the kindergartner demographic. Anyways, I read that the main actor died, so I guess it couldn't have gone on much longer. But I used to lay awake at night, wondering what had happened to those people and if they ever became royalty. I guess this was my first experience with a show being cancelled, and it traumatized me.
1) Ray Vitte's death was NOT AT ALL attributed to drug usage. Both the autopsy and subsequent toxicology studies showed no indication whatsoever that Ray Vitte had been using drugs on the day the died. 2) Ray Vitte did not die in a 'third rate motel.' He in fact died at his Studio City apartment that he shared with his wife, Ernesta Vitte. 3) The TV series 'The Quest' was cancelled shortly BEFORE Ray Vitte's death and not afterwards. According to the coroner's report, Ray Vitte died of liver degeneration as well as heart failure. As to be expected, his family disputes those findings and instead believes that Mr. Vitte died as a result of the physical struggle he had with the police authorities the evening of his death. There has never been a clear explanation for why Ray Vitte had been screaming and shouting during the day and the evening the police were called to his residency in Studio City. His wife was not at home when the police arrived, so she could offer no explanation for his behavior that night. Though there is some indication that Ray Vitte had been suffering from an undisclosed medical problem. Earlier in the month (February 11, 1983 to be exact), Mr. Vitte had been hospitalized for an indefinite period to determine the cause of a lingering fever.
Ray Vitte, best known for his work as the d.j. in "Thank God it's Friday," played Cody Johnson, a con man who claimed heir to the throne of a European kingdom. In real life, however, he was claiming heir to a drug addiction which manifested itself in a police standoff in a third rate motel. The series was soon after cancelled :)
