Cyril Sneer softens up
Shark Bytes
i recently started watching this show on youtube when i saw this page. Now, i love it! i would like to purchase a vhs set off ebay, but they are like $30 after shipping (almost always from Canada). Bert is so much like me, its weird. I wish they brought it to america.
A question for Raccoons fans out there: Is Bert related to Cyril Sneer? THey both have those weird noses, kinda phallic-looking. I hafta know!

i love this show as a kid and now i'm 20 and still love it and they started reairing it in canada get to watch it everyday
Hey, all! My name is Dan Lalande and I was one of the original writers for the show (approx. 28 episodes.) I must say, I'm extremely gratified to read how much everybody still appreciates this series; never would have imagined it at the time! Now then, a word about when the show started to JTS i.e Cyril's softening: my writing partners and I were dyed in the wool Warner Bros fans; we were alawys trying to downplay the sentimental agenda and environmental focus of creator Kevin Gillis and make the show more character/ gag oriented - consequently, we focused primarily on Bert (our Bugs Bunny) and Cyril Sneer (our Yosemite Sam.) About halfway through the run of the series, we left, and a new team of writers, more in tune with Kevin's sensiblities, took over. Kevin now produces a new animated hit, "Atomic Betty," while I'm at work on feature films (5 and counting) and producing and directing TV commercials. Again, a great big thank you to you all for the many compliments!
My girlfriend and I were sifting through some old VHS tapes of hers of cartoons her parents taped for her, and lo and behold...we found THREE episodes of The Raccoons on one tape! Here we are in our late 20's acting 7 years old again, it was awesome. Unlike most shows from my childhood (such as He-Man), this one has amazingly stood the test of time.
I'm in full agreement with the Cyril Sneer makeover being where the show Jumped. That annoyed the piss out of me, even back then.
P.S. - I'm with ross...the theme at the end credits made my girlfriend and I very wistful (even though it's a goofy '80s pop tune).

One of the great things about my parents subscribing to satellite TV back in the late '80's was the fact this gem aired on the Disney Channel. By this miracle, I received exposure to this marvelous cartoon in south central Utah. The animation and music beds accompanying each episode were brilliant and the plots were always meaningful. Although this series was marketed to children, it's obvious that adults can relate to it as well with its compelling storylines and masterful way of articulating proper values for people of all societies. Thus, it's no wonder that I desperately want the Raccoons on DVD for my birthday this June. Like all of you, Bert was my favorite one on the show with his haphazard stunts and insane ideas. Nevertheless, I do admit to having crushes on both Lisa and Melissa as they were both attractive for raccoons. I may not agree with the Canadians ideas of politics and football, but when it comes to producing cartoons, they're magnificent.
I live in SE MI and was fortunate enough to be able to pick up CBC from Windsor (albeit a snowy picture). When I was little my babysitter would put the TV to ch 9 and I watched Fraggle Rock and the Raccoons. I always loved the theme music at the end "Run With Us". I also loved Cyril and Cedric Sneer, Burt and Schaeffer. However I could never understand why Schaeffer could talk and his puppy couldn't. The episode I remember best is the one where they were all trying to catch a giant fish, but Cyril ended up polluting the lake so badly that it killed every living thing in it and they said the lake couldn't be used again for several generations. That was very sad.
The Raccoons never jumped the shark. I remember it when I was 6 years old I used to watch it. Laughing a Bert's hairbrained schemes. It was one of the very few cartoons that could deal with serious matters and still be funny. It is a shame there aren't more cartoons like this nowadays.
It never jumped. Sure, there were mistakes made (such as turning Cyril Sneer into a nice guy in the later seasons, or being overly preachy at times), but the *overall quality of the show never faltered* even in these instances. The rock-solid stories, songs and wonderfully developed characters provided more than enough coverage for the occasional misstep (which every show in history is guilty of). I loved this show when I was younger, and I love it even more today (just turned 30 last week). It's a shame more episodes weren't produced, but given the bitter enmity between some of the producers toward the end of its run, it probably would have suffered if it had kept going under those circumstances.
Oh, my god! I loved this show! Okay, the animation was so-so and the episodes were often preachy. But that theme song...! Oh, that theme song! And I'll always remember the severely 80's font in the title, and that stiff old Mr. Voice presenting the return of the show from the commercials ( The RaCOONS ). Wow. What a show. I think I can remember watching it in school, in grade 3. I can't understand why we would've. Maybe it was Christmas.
I watched this show all the time when I was little, and I loved the characters. This show was really intelligent for a cartoon. It had really good writing, great plots, and characters that made you think. The show had a point. It showed the characters making decisions. Sometimes they made good decisions, but sometimes they made bad decisions, but the show always showed the consequences of the characters' decisions. The show's point was that every decision you make does have consequences. It's sad that not many cartoons do have a point anymore. This was a great cartoon, but I do admit that it had a time when it jumped the shark. The above poster got it absolutely right with the opinion that this show jumped the shark when Cyril Sneer stopped being an asshole and started being nicer. Every show needs an asshole villain, or it gets boring and dull.
The Raccoons jumped as they started developing Cyril Sneer away from his bad guy side to be softer just so Cedric could be more confident. I'm sorry, but I would prefer to see balance of good and bad in a TV show.
Never jumped, and never would if it stayed on the air longer. This show is one of the best cartoons made for TV, period. It wasn't some 30-minute toy commercial; it had great characters, great plots, and great songs. Like any fan of this show, I love Bert. He always knew how to make me crack a smile. This show was one of my favorites when I was little, and will remain that way.
This was a great show when I was young, and it still is today. They had some wonderful stories and character development that made people think... not too many toons could say that. It's a shame it didn't last longer, but the producers were at least smart enough to realize when something did not work and fix it (ie writing the human rangers out early on, thus saving the show from being a weak Hanna Barbera type toon).
