Nick Adams was terrific as Johnny Yuma. Adams had a supporting role in "Rebel Without a Cause", and he may have modeled his performance on James Dean. But Adams performance didn't seem derivative. He was very authentic as the sensitive young Confederate veteran who is writing his thoughts in a journal as he travels the country.

ABC canceled "The Rebel" after its second season because talented producer Andrew Fenady made a private eye pilot for NBC with Peter Graves.

There was later talk of bringing back "The Rebel" as an hour series called "The Rebel and the Yank". I heard James Drury would have played the yank who teams up with Johnny Yuma.

Rod Serling must have been a fan. He later created a series called "The Loner" about William Colton (Lloyd Bridges), a battle weary Union veteran who wanders from town to town.

The most memorable aspects of "The Rebel" were Adams star making performance and Johnny Cash's great rendition of the theme.
