So what you are basically telling me is that a show that takes dialogue from old tv shows that we thought were funny in the past isn't funny now. Hmmm. I think you took this show too seriously. It never got a chance to develop. I loved the Facts of Life parody and would have loved to have seen that every week. Mrs. Garrett with her drawn-out "Oh, Jo" and "Tootie!" was downright hilarious. The black lady that played Tootie/ Dee from What's Happening/and (Arnold?) from Different Strokes had talent. MadTV apparently saw this, as they did a funny sketch about VH1 doing a I Love the (20)00's miniseries and had the actors play Mrs. Garrett and Tootie. This show was funnier than you give it credit for, and if you look back impartially, you'll agree.
Eh...there were some funny moments. The Facts of Life parody was good. But by and large, this was a pretty sucky show. Could've been good, but a lot of the impressions were weak, and the directions the "plots" took didn't make any sense. I'd give it a day one leap myself.
I'll admit this show was promising at first, but it got real bad, real fast. That's all I'm gonna say.
jumped day one! NBC should have just put on dead air instead of this disaster, would have been more entertaining.
This show wasn't on long enough to jump. Sure, it contained sophomoric humor and a plethora of sight gags, but it made me laugh. By the way, people, if you're offended, change the channel.
Day one--Mad TV (or, to be honest, just about ANY sketch comedy show) has done funnier spoofs of old sitcoms. The only good one, I thought, was their take on the ORIGINAL "Rerun Show"--"What's Happening!!", and even then, they had to ruin it by bringing in Fred Berry ("Rerun" from the original show). In regards to other posters: While they were denied rights to spoof "All in the Family", were they allowed to touch "Sanford and Son" or "Good Times"? (Maybe they did, but I missed it.) Spoofs of those shows would be pretty funny (imagine a spoof of "Sanford and Son" with, say, white people). Does anybody know who played Ms. Romano/Bonnie Franklin on this show? SIDENOTE: Paul Vogt (one of the performers on this show - he did Mrs. Garrett) has appeared from time to time on "Mad TV" this past season (02-03). He's done Mrs. Garrett/Charlotte Rae at least twice on there.
It sucked for the most part, but I laughed my butt off at the What's Happening parody, especially the actor playing Rerun's dance moves. They actually used some of the dialogue from the original episode and had the original Rerun, Fred Berry playing the judge. Amazing that he can still dance like that.
I have to admit, I enjoyed The Rerun Show. It served its purpose well for me in the midst of a drought with record-breaking heatwaves, when all one wants to do is vegetate in front of the tv, and laugh at some silly, goofy crap. When it jumped for me was when they overdid it by using Star Wars, ape, and Osbourne gimmicks. Other than that, I LIKED the sophomorcism of this series. I found particularly amusing the "Facts of Life" with the dead-on "Mrs. G," "Jo," and "Natalie" with her constant nodding and smiling. Jo's line "I wanted to get you something more than just a CAAHD" made me laugh hysterically for some reason. I also got a good laugh from the "Bewitched" episode by counting the seconds from the beginning until the expected 2-Darrin joke. The payoff came in the form of the "Dual-Darrin timeclock" bit. Clever. To the poster who would have liked to see "All in the Family" spoofed: The creators of TRS, as a condition of being allowed to use some of the shows they DID do, were contractually obligated not to TOUCH "All in the Family."
This show had two major things working against it: A). It was spoofing comedies. All of the great comedies spoofed serious genres. You don't spoof something that is already trying to get laughs. B). Those shows that they spoof are so dated, that watching the episodes themselves is now great comedy, just to say, "Wow, did I actually LIKE that?" Spoofing "Airport" movies is one thing, but spoofing TV comedies that we watched every week is just an idea that cannot work.
"The Rerun Show" was a hilarious send-up of a litany list of classic television sitcoms. On a network where the only good comedy left is the ever-brilliant "Frasier", this shows NBC might have some fun left in it yet. The parodies of "Diff'rent Strokes", "Facts of Life" and "Saved by the Bell" are the best. A few of the gags are a tad tasteless, but overall, the writing is snappy, the actors and actresses talented and the set design spot-on. Hope to see it back next summer or sooner, if possible. Hmm...maybe Friends or Will & Grace will get cancelled...
I caught the repeat of episode #1 on Vh-1 and thought the Different Strokes gag was HILARIOUS! The Partridge Family one was pretty good too. I was so impressed I watched the next episode on NBC - whooa! What a bunch of crap! Episode #1 must be the one the network officials saw when they greenlighted this project - too bad there was no decent follow-up.
The Rerun Show is interesting, but making a weekly (or is it bi-weekly) half-hour show out of it is really stretching a weak premise. Are they going to limit their repertoire to just about eight old shows? Some of the characterizations are amusing, but then you see the same show spoofed again, and it isn't funny. The two blonde chicks and black chick are sexy, but that does not a good show make. It's like a second rate version of a tepid Saturday Night Live Sketch...one you would see buried between 12:30 a.m. and sign off if you stopped drinking early that evening.
I've only watched a few of the shows so far, but my God! Most people who have commented on this show are SUPREME TV SNOBS!!!! God forbid if one might find childish/sexual innuendo humorous. Jeez, just 'cause you grow up doesn't mean you have to take everything so seriously!! And if you're all so up on TV news, at least find out about the show before you crucify it. The most annoying comments to me have been about the choice of shows that are parodied and the fact that this won't be a long-term series. First, the producers of this show had to get permission to use the exact scripts & characters/themes as parody material. Therefore, they can't mine every show that's ever been done. I agree that Married With Children isn't something I consider classic (but neither is Diff'rent Strokes or The Facts Of Life, if you want to be honest). Second, everything I read about the Rerun Show prior to its debut, noted that is is a temporary series (I think 5-6 episodes, total). If ratings are good, though, I'm sure they'll expand on it. So don't think your cancellation wish has come true when the show stops running soon. And get a grip about Dana Plato!!!! I can't get over the fact that there are so many people out there slamming this show as being in bad taste, yet thinking that Dana Plato's life was "tragic." A little girl who grows up in dirt poor in the projects who's an innocent bystander murdered in a drive by shooting-----THAT'S Tragic!! Dana Plato not having the strength & inner character to forge a life for herself after childhood stardom is just plain sad. Not Tragic. Get a grip People! This is not supposed to be high brow, original stuff. I think that the troupe of actors does a great job mimicking the characters (Props to Mrs. Garrett, Rerun & Mrs. Partridge....that dude is awesome!). I for one, like to have some mindless drivel to laugh at once in awhile. While the Pedophile references in the Diff'rent Strokes episode was a bit much, it was still funny on its face as a parody of the show. I'd rather watch a show like this than any of that Reality Drivel that's clogging the airwaves. But it's definitely not something that could last for long without losing its appeal to the people who enjoy it. I just don't see why people are taking this show's premise so personally. I'm just as guilty on this last point: Aren't we thinking just a little bit TOO much about this stuff? Don't we have lives to lead?
Wasn't this supposed to be parodies of CLASSIC television shows? What the hell is Saved By the Bell and Married With Children doing on then? Saved was a Saturday afternoon show with low ratings and Married was a hit....on Fox. Even worse, on early Fox. Back then, the three real networks could get better ratings with a test pattern. Sadly, because these shows are far from "classic", they have resorted to silly stunts like the Star Wars, Planet of the Apes or the Osbournes. If I will allow it to be considered humorous at all, then I will say it was funny for about 3 seconds. After that, it was just stupid "comedians" (to use the phrase loosely), parodying unknown episodes of mediocre shows that most people have never seen before, while dressed as something else entirely. Ho hum.
