Ok we all know this show Has sucked for years. What I can't stand is how the other networks on TV like CNN FOX etc. etc. always like to show the highlights from the previous Sat. Night Live show. God in the old days a network woud'nt even acknowledge another station let alone play clips from it. How desperate they must be. Bunch of Ass Kissers. Ok , the reason this was great back in the day was the talented actors and equally talented writers. Today the writers are just so lazy that's why every skit sucks. Please Lorne Michaels RETIRE!!!!!
Jumped when it turned into a teeny-bopper show and the mean-spirited Tina Fey took over..

You can still be a left-wing comic and be funny without being so mean-spirited towards the right....That is my problem with Tina Fey's Palin...
Hasn't been funny since Jame Curtain left! Tina is just another In-The-Tank for Barack Obama, the Most Merciful Messiah. Not a bit funny. Palin is much prettier and Palin has brains.
I'll never get why Norm Macdonald was supposed to be that great. He was O.K., but he really started to get bad near the end. "let's just end it." He'd say when the whole news was going badly. Great work there.

Man, I wish it were 92 right now. Seriously.
After a pretty strong 2007-08 season, the new season is off to a horrible start. The Phels and Franco hosted episodes were both total disasters. A whole sumer to brainstorm, and this is the best you could come up with? Especially with the presidential campaign that's going on. Also, SNL has gotten into a weird habit that I've never seen before of making similar jokes through the same episode. The first episode had three meth jokes, and the second episode had two Rosie Perez impersonations. Two references of a completely irrelevant actess? The funniest thing about SNL is the show ends, and there's a list of writrs longer than the Yankees roster. 30 writers, and this is the crap they came up with?
I'm really surprised that "Norm McDonald getting canned" is Number Two on this list. He was good on the "fake news", yes, but he was so impressed with himself that his act wore thin and he almost never appeared in a sketch; again, when he did he could barely contain his laughter at his own schtick. Meh, he was always way overrated imo.

I think the show usually has a cast of strong performers but the writing seems to always let them down. I never understand why the rest of the show can't be as funny as the political openings and the Weekend Updates?

The show's had some good and bad periods but it's never been as good as it was circa 1977-1978. It's probably unrealistic to expect that it ever will be, as you can only be "edgy" for a short time and by now, the show like "The Ed Sullivan Show", a part of Americana, no matter how hard to tries to be "out there".
Best skit of 2008 was Hilary with Hilary. Obama cancelled skit because he is dropping like a stone in the polls. The smears and lies about Palin by driveby media will unite decent Americans to elect Palin.
Saw the season premiere-skits were inane-no presidential campaign skits other than the Palin thing at the beginning. This show absolutely sucks, Amy Poehler laughs at her own jokes. Weekend update was retarded.
SNL jumps back and forth all the time. Like any other live team endeavor, some years are championship ones and others are for rebuilding. I don't think you can point to any one fallow period and say, "This single individual made the ship go down." I think SNL might be helped to be more consistent, however, if they could always retain one or two performers who were true "all-rounders" — people like Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Will Farrell and Jim Belushi — who have a large range of talent to sort of "carry" the show while other performers carve out their niches. I think sometimes the desire to give some performers "fair play" ends up hurting the show. The strongest ideas and execution should be allowed to make it to the final taping, even if that means some performers are in every sketch.

I also think the show sometimes believes its own negative press. Namely, that sketches after Weekend Update somehow aren't as good as those before, and that they don't have to be. If you can recognize a sketch as weak enough to be filler towards the end of the program, it shouldn't be in the episode at all. You can't always predict what will happen in a live taping — maybe a performer will screw it up — but you can tell whether the script offers a sketch a reasonable chance of success or not. Too often — across all eras of the show — it feels like the writers have essentially given up in the last half hour.
I think this show has started to pick back up for the first time in years. As previously stated, they will never outdo what was done in the 70's... The cast, or should I say the writers that dominated from 95-present nearly killed the show for me. I only in the past year have been able to not only stomach but enjoy the show. Congrads on making teh show worth watching again.
Seems Tina Fey left SNL too soon. She would have made a great Sarah Palin!
It's hard to say 'jump the shark' to this show that had all that horrible early 80s stuff but went on to the genius late 80s/early 90s stuff that I watched which was fantastic. Yeah, they've had some decent stuff since then, but nothing even comes close to Arsenio Beckman and Massive Headwound Harry.
Enough with how great the 1970's cast was. You are remembering it through a certain "haze" in your brain. C'mon, man, it's a new century!
Man, I tell you something, Few, Very few SNL players have made successful jumps to the big screen. Even Fewer have transfered their SNL characters into good or even decent movies. The Few success have been Blues Brothers, Waynes World, and Well, Nope thats it. The Rest of them Have been pure JUNK! I mean it may have been a funny character Sketch for five minutes but to stretch that into a ninety minute movie just does not work! Think of all the terrible flicks that have been made because of this. Such as , Its Pat, The Ladies Man, Black Sheep, Tommy Boy, Night at the Roxbury, Just to name a few. People, Learn from the mistakes of the past and think real hard and long before you transplant another sketch character to a full length movie.
Love the show - Haven't seen it in about ten years.
