I found the second season painful and forced and I LIVE in the same state and love visiting the area where it was shot. I couldn't get beyond the the first three episodes of the third series: I was always sorry and embarrassed it had gone ahead. There was a catchphrase born of an advertisement from the '70S that ran "When you're on a good thing, stick to it!"
Wrong, wrong, WRONG!!
Wrong, wrong, WRONG!!
Definitely when Diver Dan Left, you could see the producers putting on the skis and revving up the boat for a jump of a lifetime. The next two seasons were quite painful to watch and a waste of my sunday night, hmmmm, there is definitely something about being constantly promised and robbed...
This isn't *directly* about Seachange, that show rocks, however when Shultzy married Zoe, and moved to Melbourne, Mt Thomas was never the same. Then Shultzey left Zoe, changed his name to Max, and moved to Pearl Bay. Tess isn't as nice as Shultzey and Mt Thomas needs it's 6ft 4, 16 stone Sergeant whos a "good copper and slept with the boss."
Seachange became a phenomenon when it became the most highly rated show in Australia, an unprecedented event for the ABC (Australian Broacasting Corporation, Australia's main public broadcaster). Very quickly the show was dumbed down to please the new audience of hitherto commercial-station-only viewers, and out went the intelligence and quirkiness that had made it popular in the first place. In came painfully obvious plots, Mills & Boon-ish developments with Laura, and overacting. What a waste.
Definitely JTS when Laura and Diver got all sloppy at the start of the second season. I was in a roomful of confirmed Seachange fans when this episode aired, and we all agreed that the show had been caught, eaten and digested by the shark by the end of the episode. Sure, Diver and Laura could have had sex and otherwise been gooey, but it was WAY overdone - to the point where raspberries were being blown at the screen. I made a point of never watching Seachange again after this because the writers were obviously determined to insult the intelligence of the show's audience. Good on you, David Wenham (Diver) for getting out in the nick of time. You saw the shark coming.
This show hasn't jumped . . . yet. Although Diver leaving at the end of season one sounded warning bells, the show has actually increased the audience share since. The writers wisely made Max, the replacement character, very different from the yummy Diver Dan. Also, the supporting cast has enough drive to carry on regardless. Question is, can it survive to season four? There I'm not so sure . . . maybe they should quit whilst they're ahead.
