This show ascended further and further up the ramp with every alien episode. The poor plots and fx in the 2nd season didn't help, but once the sent to another planet that was it. I tried to watch the 3rd season out of loyalty but they killed off Ortiz! He was my favorite character (highly underdeveloped)I tried to watch anyway but then they killed off Brody! So I was done completely.
I really think this show jumped with the start of season 3: Much as I love Micheal Ironside, his character was just wrong at the helm of this boat in a lot of cases, and to quote 3Rd Rock "In a cornfield!?! That's such a cliche . . . "
I loved the ancillary characters in the 2nd season, particularly the way they got special roles in some story lines; Darwin the dolphin was underdeveloped as a role, despite the fine comedy moments he had -
Darwin to Lucas:" COME PLAY DARWIN"
Lucas:" I can't, Darwin, I have to work right now."
D:"WHAT WORK?"
L:"Well . . .You know how when you do something for us, we give you fish?"
D:"YES. DARWIN LIKE DO THINGS FOR LUCAS, GET FISH."
L:" Well, people have to do things to get fish . . Or at least, to get money to buy fish."
D
Pause)"DARWIN GO CATCH FISH TOO. NOT DO THINGS FOR FISH"
L:"Humans can't do that . . . We can only get fish by working"
D
pause)"NO WORK, NO FISH?"
L:"Yep, that sums it up."
D:"THAT SUCKS" (Swims off)
A nice Spock-like observance upon humanity. And speaking of that, what about the only Genetically enhanced crew member who is loyal to people also happens to be the only mentally retarded one? Some subtle stuff there.

I've got to admit, I'm one of the few who would confess to actually liking the second season over the first. I also liked Dom's sons Peter and Michael. The interpersonal relationships were better. But man, there were some awful episodes. The man-eating plants? Yow! The special effects were lame and so was the plot. I thought Season 3 tried to return to the original season 1 formula, and I liked Michael Ironside as the new captain, but by then it was too little too late. "Voyage to the Bottom of the Ratings." - Jay Leno, on Seaquest's cancellation.
Seaon 1 and 2 awsome but seaon 3 disapointing... wish it would come back as next genration bring it back to Sci-Fi
The PC police got hold of this show. A great concept, much like 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, but the show was riddled with political correctness for a politically correct time.
I watched every episode of season 1, but stopped watching when Lucas's dad boiled the ocean.
I didn't watch s2, but s3's premiere...it was horrible. From that drip finding the Seaquest in the cornfield, to the chemistry-free Ford/Henderson lovefest, to "I'm your new captain, Michael "death glare" Ironside, the show was sprinting toward cancellation. Once they killed Brody, I was done.
At least we got to see Krieg one last time.

By the time season 3 came around, you could tell things were slowly, but steadily going downhill. The first two seasons were great. Some eps in season two were iffy, but still good sci-fi/fantasy TV. Season 3 shattered all of that and went into the absurd and just plain ridiculous. I watched, only because I was a fan of Jonathan Brandis (RIP), but wasn't all that enthused by the time it was canceled and figured the actors would be able to find better work quickly.
Could someone please tell me what the heck is wrong with NBC?!!! The first season was outstanding. Then season 2 and they got rid of Krieg, Crocker, Westphalen, and Hitchcock. Getting rid of some of the best characters and actors was a huge blow to the series. If it ain't broke don't fix it! I couldn't stand to watch it when the second season debuted but did anyway just to see what was going to happen. The writing was so awful I cringed everytime it came on. Let's see fish boy, genetically altered boy, psychic who knows that Roy is going to jump ship. Need I say more? Third season I didn't bother but caught up on the sci-fi channel. What a load of ****! By the time they canceled the thing I just didn't care. Now we have to watch swill like my name is earl and Heroes. No wonder NBC is crap! I'm all for the writer's strike. Saves me from a lot of brain damage. At least season one will soothe my troubled mind. Go Seaquest season one!!!
The first season and the first half of Season 2 were great sci-fi TV. Contrary to what other posters have said, the seaQuest was not abducted by aliens until the finale of Season 2. The season 3 revamp was titled "Seaquest 2032," but by then, the show was a shell of itself. NBC torpedoed this show by dumbing down the plots, bringing in aliens, monsters and ghosts and doing away with the adventure-driven exploration plots of the early episodes. No wonder Roy Schieder wanted off this boat. Thankfully, the Season 1 DVDs are out, so those of us who watched can remember how good it was before it ran aground.
The show got a little ridiculous at the end of the first season, when the sub was kidnapped by a flying saucer. Viewers wondered how the hell Seaquest would do merged with Battlestar Galactic.
They delayed the start of the second year by a week or so, and then came up with a sort of "bad dream" solution. Various cast members woke up to find themselves in their respective hometowns with no memories of recent events. When they found their way back to the Seaquest's port, Scheider explaned that they had all been conscipted by this distant planet to help in its war against another planet, and had helped win that war. No further details about battles, weapons or anything. "We lost a lot of good friends" -- the only words of explanation for the disappearance of about half of the first year's cast.
Then, a couple of weeks later, Sheider is replaced as captain by Michael Ironside - the sort of character actor who inspires instant dislike. That, and hokey plotlines about Michael York as emperor of half the earth, managed to alienate viewers.
Sort of a Buck Rogers syndrome, where, instead of some micro-tuning of weaknesses, the second season changes the entire purpose of the show and loses whatever fans stuck thru the first year.

seaquest was so awful it made voyage to the bottom of the sea look great.
and the phoney lookig sub didn't help

Oh, it jumped as hard as I've ever seen in the second season. Too many cast changes after only one season and the total format change from an interesting science fact type show to a sub par science fiction show. The writing and special effects in the second season were so bad. I also hated the Deluise brothers with a burning passion. I can forgive Peter for doing Stargate SG-1 but Micheal can burn for all I care.
I also think it was a big mistake to destroy the original seaQuest at the end of the first season.
The theme song in the 3rd season was a new low as well.

The first season was really good quality TV...in the second the series lost a lot of this charm because it got less realistic and the first crew was simply the better one. But it really jumped the shark with the last season...Bridger was gone, Lucas looked really crappy with his new styling (and got oc by becoming an ensign) and I really didn't care about another war-storie.
The second season was not actually named Seaquest 2010. That was a bit sarcastic, but they might as well have changed the name to that because the format and substance of the show totally slipped away.
The National Geographic and Discovery Channel ocean research programs are slower than a drama like Seaquest 2023, but at least we might actually learn something.
