This show is brilliant. For something so theatrical, it hooks you and keeps you there for 43 episodes of conversation. How? It's the magnificent writing, for the most part, but not only. Glynn Turman's performance as Alex's father was outstanding. Oscars used to be given for this kind of work, when you could still find it in the movies.
I was intrigued from the first time I seen it. I don't normally watch T.V. because of the garbage I see. Most shows are about sex, money, fame and etc. I really experience Paul really caring about people and them having solutions to each situation. I also like the fact, that Paul is transparent about his own doubts, fears, and conflicts. What I like most is that Gina makes Paul accountable to his integrity as a therapist and also deal with his issues, so that he can help others. I really hope there are many more seasons to come.
I complete agree with John Hein's comments re: In Treatment except for the following points. Jake and Amy's story line gets more and more compelling as the "layers of the onion" get exposed. They are terribly screwed up that you can't help but tune in each week to see how bad it can get between the two of them. It becomes heart-breaking. And as for Dr. Paul's visits to his colleague (Diane West) for his own dose of therapy, there is good reason why at first "things" from their past are not blatantly said out loud. Yes it is a bit of narrative ploy but when the trues comes out after weeks of diplomacy? Wow... it's quite the scene between the two of them. I have seen the entire series and I am keeping my fingers crossed that there will be a season 2. There is something at once cathartic AND voyeuristic about watching other people's problems!!!!
Hated seeing the season end as this is the best show on television. Very edgy. Byrne is great even as a lovesick puppy, and he didn't disappoint in the final episode. Only hope that HBO realizes it has a winner here.
It hasn't jumped yet. Gabriel Byrne is riveting as the seriously conflicted shrink who is at the end of his marriage and sees no love beyond it. I won't give away the season ending but it's worth a watch - even two or more.
From Dawn: After sitting through the horrible JOHN FROM CINCINNATI and the boring TELL ME YOU LOVE ME, I was skeptical about IN TREATMENT. But I'm glad I gave it a chance. It's really good. Really, really REALLY good. Nice to see that HBO can still give us something addicting to watch. Five half-hour shows a week, a different patient each day. An oversexed nurse (or is it doctor, I'm not sure), a know-it-all Iraqi vet, a bratty suicidal gymnast, a constantly bickering couple, and the therapist seeing his own shrink at the end of the week. All the actors are top notch, but you have to give extra props to Gabriel Byrne for being in pratically every scene and enduring some really emotional wallops. If this show doesn't get any Emmy nods come September, I won't be happy. It's almost the end of the season. I hope they bring this back. If you haven't seen it, give it a chance. it's emotional at times and can get pretty tense, but it's worth it.
absolutly has never jumped. really love this show. hate for the season to be over and please bring it back next year!!!
This is the downfall of HBO. You can't spin to one HBO channel without this show being on. It's the "John from Cincinatti" approach to programming. Play something long enough and maybe people will like it. Well, it's not working. It's on so much I may get a therapist for the anger issues it's causing me. If HBO were a news channel, "In Treatment" would be the scroll. While we enjoyed Tony Soprano at a shrinks office, we never really asked for a non-stop feed of this 24/7. Please HBO, give it a rest and let us see "The Breakup" and "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" another 2,000 times. It would be better...
