Compared to Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons can be considered television's answer to Shakespeare. But, that's not to say it didn't have plenty of shark jumps. The first few years it had very good writing and continuity, and stayed true to it's era. But the biggest jump from which there was no return was the death and later single episode resurrection of Curt. I never understood why they felt it was necessary to get rid of Curt and replace him with ultra-doofus Jonesy, and then have him turn up again, explaining he avoided Mary Ellen for those years because his war injuries left him impotent. HUH? Did that make any sense to anyone other than the lame brain who wrote the episode? It's not like Mary Ellen was some sex goddess, folks.
I just finished watching 'The Moonshiner' from the 7th season dvd pkg. 2 visitors come to the Walton house - cousin Boon, the moonshiner, and Daisy Garner, the girl John-Boy was supposed to marry. It seems Daisy had an illegimate child, which Cora Beth looks down upon.
It's so funny because Olive is scolding Cora Beth for being judgemental toward Daisy one minute and looking down her nose at Uncle Boon the next. I love Livvy, but she should practice what she preaches.

This show JTS so many times. I hated to hear the closing credits because it was time for me to go to bed when I was growing up.
Ben: Bossy butthole
Jason: Boring and nice- needed a good lay.
JimBob: Focused on mechanics- should have gone into the military and off the show.
John-Boy- jumped when the new one came on. Richard Thomas is the bomb.
Grandparents: Slowly made the show go down hill when they died/got ill. They brought a lot to the show.
Mary-Ellen: Loved her character, loved the married part, hated the return of Kurt (he shouldn't have been killed off- should have been Jason or JimBob).
Erin: Annoying as hell- even in the reunions.
Elizabeth: Catchall for cuteness. No real substance.
Mom: Should have never left.
Dad: Always looked the drunk.
JTS: New-old Kurt and John-Boy. The whole Daisy storyline. The Ben gets married storyline. Jim-Bob and the collection of ribbons. Elizabeth and Amy never having a lesbian relationship. Ike and Erin never hooking up. Yancy in general.

I thought it jumped the shark with the "Changeling" poltergeist and the "Ghost Story" episodes. Don't get me wrong: I found those eppys entertaining, just unusual because most of the characters in the series seemed overly religious.
They should have ended the show when John- Boy realized his dream of going to new york to become a writer.
Another quality "family" show that simply ran too long; should have ended at the end of season five with The Achievement and avoided substitute John-Boy, dead grandfather, etc...
I absolutely love this show! In fact I am in the process of writing a series of short stories based on my childhood that would be somewhat similar. (I am only 15 now) and I think I like this show so much because I relay John boy's character to me in so many ways its almost creepy. But I wanted a few opinions. Do you think a show like the waltons could be released on air in todays market, or am I just wasting my time? Email me your opinions please at: withers2010@yahoo.com (thanks)
It didn't jump, but it had a shark sighting in the second season, when John-boy goes to college. He got such a big ego it was ridiculous! He must have thought he was the only person ever accepted to a college!
I love the Waltons, I think the episodes with the grandparents our the best, but I love all the charctors, and I think they looked great, we need a show that is moral like that today, Earl Hamner had it going on, we only wish we could grow up in a world like Waltons mountain, I wish each day I was their, its 3 am and I am watching an episode of you guesed, The Waltons, they Rock as far as I am concerned..
I don't think John Boy was creepy, nor was Michael Landon on Little House on the Prairie. I liked the Waltons, except I wished they'd never replaced John Boy.
For me the show jumped when the war came to Walton's Mountain. That's when I lost interest.

i love the waltons show.it`s a place where one can go to escape..it`s kinda nice to live in a pretend world where love conqures all, only if it is an hour a day... and for some odd reason we still can`t git `nough of `em.. thanks to hallmark for still airing their show..
I have to agree with the posters who didn't like Curt. I never understood why Mary Ellen would choose him over David. It certainly didn't seem that she was madly in love with him. To me Curt was always sour looking and acted greater-than-thou. He seemed to always be disgusted with her...made me wonder why they ever got married in the first place. He looked like he was too old for her...old enough to be her Father! And when the killed him off then brought him back...ridiculous. That whole episode was too far fetched fo rme. It never woulda happened like that! No one in that family woulda let her go on that trip alone as close knit as they were.I loved and still love the show, and I choose to over look the inconsistancies with the timeline, but I will admit some things should have written differently!
