I remember watching this show as a kid. However, it was very "unrealistic". In my opinion, most sitcoms (if not all) are "unrealistic".
Of the characters on the show, Uncle Phillip was, by far, my least favorite.
I honestly don't remember any of the Cousin Nicky episodes, so I can't comment on them.

Late last night, I read on Wikipedia that Alex Karras and Susan Clark are/were also married to each other in real life.
The "TV Guide" cover you are thinking about, I believe it was actually a Mad Magazine or Cracked magazine cover.
Sylvester P. Smythe. That's the full name of the CRACKED Magazine mascot.
Anyway, remember loving this show when I was 5, but stopped watching not because of anything the show did, but because "Misfits of Science" was on at the same time, and I just liked that show a whole lot better. Watching him in syndication now, it's one of those things that were awesome when you were 5, but simply grow out of.

I seem to remember them finding the previous owners of the house still living in some as-yet-undiscovered apartment. I guess it was supposed to fit right in with the dumb waiter and the ladder behind the clock. Unless I dreamed this.
It seems to me I recall seeing that shot somewhere too, but I'm damned if I remember where. So if you're crazy, then we're both crazy together.
Sounds almost like it might've been cheezy enough to have been some kind of 'TV Guide' promo ad.
Anybody know?

I swear that I remember a publicity photo of Alex Karras holding Emmanuel Lewis in the palm of his hand, and Lewis was "pretending?" to be asleep, all curled up in a little ball like some house cat. Please, somebody find this photo, so I know I'm not going crazy!
This show jumped from day one. The Burger King commercials were cute. But all Lewis, all the time? its just sick and twisted. Don't get me started on his petty attempts to act confused or sad. Talking like Cindy Brady wasn't foolin anyone either. At least Arnold was sassy and somewhat intelligent. This kid is a 16 year old, playing a 7 year old who acts like a 3 year old.
I actually liked the episode where he explained why he called Katherine Ma'am. It was really the only one I liked, I didn't watch more than two or three episodes, I couldn't stand it.
Day One. The scripts were bland, but the sticking-point was the inescapable fact that -all questions of age aside- Emmanuel Lewis/'Webster' was one of the creepiest 'children' in TV history.
At what point did ABC pull the plug on this show? For some reason, I don't remember this happening. Thanks!!!!!!
I remember an episode where Maam and George found webster and a girl friend of his naked together. He said he thought they should be in theier "birthday suits" haha. Who abandoned this little orphan, Rick James?
They ended up having a heart to heart about how that was wrong. Hell yeah it was wrong. The litlle girl was five years old, and Emmanuelle Was sixteen!! LOL!

There actually was an explanation of why Webster called his stepmother "Ma'am". He said that it sounded the most like "Mom" without actually being a mother's title because he didn't want to disrespect his deceased mother. The audience went "AAAWWW" and the stepmother got all teary eyed and hugged him.
I totally hate this show!

Although most famous for his role as "Webster", Emmanuel Lewis starred in a series of TV spots for Burger King. I remember my mom saying how cute he was, "he is just adorable!" When the show first aired, she thought it was poorly written, bu still thought Lewis was the cutest. Then, his real age was revealed and she turned on him like a rabid dog. Suddenly he became freakish, and somehow perversive. She refused to watch the show from then on and instead became totally obsessed with basketball, listening to games on the radio at ear piercing levels (even when "Webster" was not on).
