The final season, too much changed. The big problem was the carpenters' inability to finish on time. Much of that can be attributed to the fooling around and slacking that took place on day one. Also, they eliminated the secret cameraman, the quizzes with prizes, and the final quiz regarding "why they wanted to do this". TLC also kept changing the time slot for airing this show making it all the more difficult to follow.
Theresa actually KNEW what she was doing. She wasn't just eye candy. Evan's an idiot who probably couldn't even hammer a nail before Andrew showed him how. Andrew and Leslie are the best carpenters. Stephen St. Onge and Chayse Dakota are the best designers. Mark and John Bruce can move over to Trading Spaces - they're as annoying as the perky Paige. I wish Chayse would quit annoying Andrew, though. They catfight almost every epi they're together. If I ever got a room WYWOd, I'd want Stephen to design it with Leslie and Andrew. Best crew around!
WYWO climaxed when the husband came home and freaked out when he saw what they did to his deck. The look of terror in his wife's eyes was total reality. Once Even came the shark started circling; then Jason the muscle-head showed up in his wife-beaters, jumped out of the tank, and pulled WYWO straight to the murky abyss.
Finally someone funny and adorable (Anna) and they replace her with someone brassy and just not funny! (Teresa) What were they thinking??
Initially, I thought this show jumped with the way overused "will they finish in time" gimmick. I mean, come on. They use the same 3 or 4 designers, they've all done multiple episodes, they know how much time they have to pull it together and they know what their crew can and can't do. It seems unlikely that they continually come up with so many designs that are that close to the wire. My opinion changed however, with the addition of that colossal moron Evan Farmer. This guy is beyond idiotic. He seems to think he's a one man comedy extravaganza. Unfortunately for him (and the audience) he simply makes a complete ass of himself over and over and over again. Doesn't he have any friends who can take him aside and say "Dude, your an idiot! Cut it out!" Bring back Theresa.....even that first blonde host (as terrible as she was) was better.
I love this show; I was so glad when they got rid of the snide, snotty Theresa and replaced her with Evan. The show is so much funnier with him and it's a much more friendly show. With that said, I feel a bit uncomfortable with the fact that the producers seem to feel the need to get at least one shot of Evan in, say, a white, wet shirt or a bathing suit, or a towel, or in a hot tub, etc etc. They guy is a cutie, but please! It's embarrassing.
For one thing, it is a total rip-off of Trading Spaces. The host is more vapid than Paige Davis (if possible), the male carpenter is always screwing up and the other carpenter looks like she has a permanent case of PMS and every episode revolves around some bored housewife who gets a free room make-over by pretending it's something her husband wants, when 9 times out of 10, the guy doesn't give a *&%#. And we won't even talk about the designers!
While You Were Out made a clear and obvious jump at the start of the season wherein the witty and bodacious host Theresa Strausser was replaced by the whiney Evan Farmer. (The "Fozzy Bear voice" comment above nailed it perfectly!!!) The change of host on its own would normally not be enough to justify a jump, but it seems that there were other problems coinciding with this. For one thing, I think the concept is starting to run its course, and it's becoming pretty obvious. There was an episode recently where the surprise was "blown" by a hotel attendant who said to the husband "Oh, so you are the guys doing that 'While You Were Away' TV show". He ended up calling the house and saying "the jig is up". The longer the show runs, the harder it will be to fool people into thinking that the guy following them around with the videocamera asking them intimate questions about their spouse is really filming a promo ***** for the spa/hotel/amusement park. It also seems that they're trying to stretch the concept by getting away from private residences and having episodes where they decorate a politician's office or a freaking rec room in a police station. Nah-ahhh, doesn't work... sorry, I simply don't care how pretty some politicians temporary office space looks any more than I would care if they put some shrubbery and an oblong coffee table next to the fax machine at my office. Just plain stupid. Anyway, the real nail in the coffin for this show, which could be considered a second major jump, is the replacement of Andrew Dan Jumbo with a more competent, but also somewhat personality-deficient new carpenter. As far as I'm concerned, without Andrew adding the "will he finish the table on time?" element, the show loses practically all of its steam at the end. Granted, I'll still watch the show as long as they're not redecorating a public library or something ("watch Leslie sew upholstery on every book while the shelves get a faux finish"), but I honestly think that the reaper approacheth soon for this once very entertaining program.
Honestly, this is a clever show. Homeowners have input on what they want to do for their "significant others" and all of the rooms have been great for the most part. The quizzes can be improved or taken out. Aside from that, the show probably has more life than Trading Spaces does.
