Shark Bytes
Hi BBM buddies! Yes Big Blue Marble was the BEST kids show ever...I still tell my kids about my favorite episode, the kids from London who lived on a double decker bus. I too watched it religiously and loved how it showed that families loved eachother the same all over the world. I'm forty four years old and BBM was a big part of the the Peace loving seventies I remember!
I still am in touch with my "Big Blue Marble" pen pal from Australia. We've met several times (we look like sisters!) and we've been writing to each other (now email of course) since we were 9 years old. We are now FORTY!
I agree: no shark jumping on "Big Blue Marble." This show is responsible for my deep interest in different cultures from around the world, which lasts to this day. I watched from 1974 until 1978, and regret not having participated in the pen pal program. We need another show like this for today's children.
This show never jumped. How can it?This show was the BEST educational show of the 1970's and it still has an impact on those who remember the show and remember watching it religiously like I did.I even have some episodes on ***** and DVD and it was a treat to revisit this show after many years. It was awesome, fun and memoriable.I used to watch it every Saturday morning on WUTV Channel 29 in Buffalo and it was always worth waiting for each and every week.I also have the classic soundtrack album that was released on A&M Records in 1974 as the show was taking off, which has the original theme song and other songs played over many episodes, and it's great. This show showed what children in other countries did for fun in their spare time. The show was always a great learning experience and we definitely need a show like this one today to educate kids of today or even better yet, bring this show back in reruns. That would be IT.Big Blue Marble was like bringing the whole world in your living room.
Im from Malaysia and i can still remember watching the BBM shows in the late 70's, yup, i got a panpal from BBM too, she's from the US, but lost contact after a few correspondence. Wonderful show, great them song.
The notes below are more than I knew - but I remembered the song from being a little kid. I hum it to myself often and my search brought me here to find the wav and words!! Thank you all.
I got a pen pal from BBM. Some kid in Italy. Wrote to him twice. Still have have the letters and pictures he sent. Think he died in an earthquake shortly after we started writing. That or he hated writing letters.....Sister got a pen pal from England..She wrote to her for a long time...and actually met her in London in 1983....she was pretty hot...the dead italian kid not so much.....ahh memories..
For the past couple weeks I have been trying to find the only pen pal I ever had, and it was through the big blue marble show.
That was such and educated show back then.
I believe that is what started me on the road of viewing documentary's on other country's culture and lifestyle I sure do miss cat weasle lol.
Just writing this note make me also remember an other great show back then fables of the green forest that was the first Japanese anime I had seen ,oh those was surely happy day......

Remembered what a pleasant childhood I've had; what a privilege it has been for me. So sad it cant be the same for millions of kids out there, on this Big Blue Marble that we live in today.
I remember both song themes, and both make me instantly happy. I was just too sad when I realized all the way in 1986 that it was gone! I still use the hello and goodbyes I learned in different languages, and have always wondered what happened to all my penpals. I now belong to a group called Couchsurfing, and pretty much (to me) it is the 21st Century version of "the BBM" with internet-pals from all over the world, except that in Couchsurfing not only you write to each other, but a lot of the time you get to really-really meet each other!
Big Blue Marble has never ever jumped the shark. I am forty-four years old, nothing but good memories about this show.I'm sure if it did last into the ninteen-nineties, somebody would have figured out a way to ruin the show. Thank goodness it went out on a high note.
I got my first and only penpal on Big Blue Marble and wrote to her from first grade through my college years! Not only did it give me a chance to learn about someone else's life, but it taught me a lot about letter writing. I remember getting my first set of stationary and personalized address labels just to encourage my friendship with my penpal.
I still sing the theme song to myself sometimes. I loved this show! I dearly wish they would bring it back, not only showing the old episodes, but creating new ones. I think a show featuring Muslim kids could go a long way to easing some of the current tensions in our world. Not just one of the best kids' shows ever, but one of the best shows ever, period!
