"How come no one had a Boston accent?". It was a COLLEGE where everyone was from somewhere else....duh!
I found this show one day on an "air" channel in reruns. Finding nothing else in the afternoon but pseudo-court, I watched it--and was pleasantly surprised. It was warm, funny, and the girl (blonde, I can't think of the name) was super hot.
Kind of miss this one.
Kind of miss this one.
Overall, a terribly under-rated show. Great casting and consistently good writing. I lost interest, however, when Tom Henry was hit by the bus while pulling up his pants. That was completely moronic. I loved Tom and his imaginary Zebra. Stupid Hollywood writers.
To the poster who complained that no one had a Boston accent: that's typical TV. Think of all the shows over the years which were set in Boston: Cheers, St. Elsewhere, Spenser for Hire, Banacek just off the top of my head, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. In all those shows, how many characters had anything even close to a Boston accent? Two: Cliff (Cheers) and Dr. Craig (St. Elsewhere).
This was a good show, but there had to have been too many network execs who decided to get involved and "tweak" the show, and when it tanked in the ratings for good, it was canned.
this show has been too corny to ever jump the shark totally... i love how people call this show unrealistic and OZ to be right on the money... like that much activity ever takes place everyday in prison... its entertainment, enjoy it for what it is... anyway this show had a major comeback by casting Biff Tannen from back to the future as the angry football booster and father of the star player... i almost **** my pants laughing...i was waiting for retarded insults like "your like a screen door in a battle ship" or "make like a tree and get out of here"...apparently if he wasn't available plan B was judge reinhold... horrible episode but that was a good laugh
This show was never even slightly funny. It jumped on day one. If the show was supposed to take place in Boston, how come nobody had a Boston accent? Half the people in Boston have heavy regional accents. I lived there. To the people who think Anthony Clark was funny, name one funny line he ever said on this show. Maybe this show could have been funny if they'd completely recast it and gotten some funny writers.
This show was quite probably the funniest show ever to be put into the slot immediately after "Friends". (7:30 pm CST Thursday nights) Unfortunately, that's always been a jinxed slot. Dunno why. They replaced this *gem* with "The Single Guy"?!? What garbage! The social commentaries of striated classed society was great! Sure, the setup and situation was weak, but the casting and dialogue were so good on this show. IMHO, the poor show never got a chance to jump before the canceled it.
This show was really funny when it first came on. It was a show that made Boston proud for a little while. However, when they changed the Dean of the school to that annoying British guy, who you may remember as the rich guy Rebecca was supposed to marry on Cheers, it seemed as if the whole show went down. The writing not only got worse, but the characters formed into characters they really weren¥t supposed to be. It all seemed to start with the Dean guy, who, at most, should have only appeared in one episode at least.
Several years ago, it was the summer before my senior year in high school and I had nothing to do. So, I kept busy in the morning watching "Boston Common" and "Ned & Stacey" re-runs on USA. For no real reason, I taped each show 'till I had them all. Now that I've found this site, I went back and watched the tapes. And...damn. "Boston Common" truly is (on the tapes) better than pretty much any new show I've seen over the past couple of years, except for "Ed", "Scrubs", and "Malcolm in the Middle". So, it definitely never jumped. It probably would have jumped after two more years had it not been cancelled because Boyd lusting after Joy would have gotten old (Ross after Rachel anyone) and the two of them as a couple would probably have not been that good. But, for that brief time it was on the air it was a great show. The closest it ever came was when they brought in Robin Colcord and changed Boyd into a student liason. Otherwise, it was a great show, with a great leading man and supporting cast whose only real problem was an inability to find it's audience and probably one too many southern jokes.
This show never jumped and died before its time. Although, I never understood what Boyd saw in the annoying, gawky blonde that had the body of a 14 year old boy. She was soooo boring.
I don't think this show ever jumped, although some episodes were definitely better than others. My favorites were when the whole gang, including Tasha went to the cowboy bar and she and Boyd line danced, and the one where Boyd was carrying on like a televangelist trying to get the students to vote for something. NBC should have given this show more time to find an audience instead of constantly moving it around the schedule where even devoted viewers couldn't find it half the time. And Anthony Clark deserves a better chance to show off his comedic talents than the terribly inconsistent "Yes Dear".
Boston Common jumped the shark when T.V. guide starting quoting Boyd rather than plugging the show. Boyd needed more support and the show needed better writing. With better support and better writing this show would still be must see t.v.
Never! It was a very funny show. Anthony Clark is a hilarious man and the show never should have been cancelled. I believe it was cancelled because Clark played a southern good-old-boy that was tooooo good at making fun of those blue blood elitist Bostonian liberal types (and I live in Boston!). Those liberal hollywood honchos just couldn't handle it. Long after they are done making bad network decisions, Anthony Clark will still be a very funny man, and he will make it big time. He may end up being Regis' age when he does it, but you can't suppress talent forever. Bring back Boyd!!!
